Job Title: Human Resource Manager
Department: Legal & HR

Reports to: Managing Director
Our client is a well established insurance company with their headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. They wish to recruit a highly competent individual for the position of Human Resource Manager with at least four (4) years’ experience in either legal or HR practice in a large firm or company.
Purpose of The Position
• To provide legal services to the Company and ensure the Company’s interests are protected.
• To plan, direct, and coordinate human resource management activities of the Insurance Company to maximize the human resource output
• Ensure smooth functioning of the Board by coordinating all the activities of the Board Committees and liaising with the Company Secretary
Responsibility and Authority
The position is responsible for Legal and Human Resource Management as outlined herein below:
A. Legal Duties
The position is responsible for:
• Attending to all matters relating to the operation and function of the Board Committees.
• Collating Committee papers and distributing them to the Committee members.
• Taking Minutes of all Board Committee meetings.
• Preparing various Board Committee reports.
• Coordinating with the Company Secretary for smooth functioning of the Board.
• Providing proactive and pragmatic advice to the business on all legal and regulatory matters.
• Reviewing and providing advice to the business upon request on matters concerning applicable contracts required for operation of the business.
• Managing legal risk within the business by taking responsibility for providing legal advice to the business on all legal matters affecting the individual departmental transactions.
• Advising Management on a variety of administrative, labour and employment law matters, including engagements and terminations.
• Appointing, supervising and managing outsourced advocates.
• Organizing for witnesses to attend court and the Company’s advocates’ offices for pre-trial briefing.
• Attending court as a Company representative/ Witness.
• Reviewing investigation reports, to ensure that they are comprehensive enough to meet the need for which they were sought, and recommending remedial action as necessary.
• Reviewing of Kenya Gazettes and Legal Notices and advising departments on changes that may be relevant to their functions.
• Advising Management on changes in the law that affect the Company.
• Assisting in ensuring that statutory registers required to be kept under the Companies Act and other relevant Acts are in order.
• Ensuring compliance with the regulatory reporting requirements of the IRA, RBA and Companies Registry.
• Filing relevant Company’s returns to the relevant Authorities and Companies Registry,
B. Human Resource Management Duties:
• Serving as a link between Management and employees by handling questions, interpreting and administering contracts and helping resolve work-related problems.
• Advising Heads of Departments on organizational policy matters such as equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment, and recommending needed changes.
• Developing HR policies and procedures, as well as the HR manual.
• Advising staff on HR policies and Administration procedures of the Company.
• Responsible for staff welfare matters including bereavement support, first-aid kit, staff sports.
• Analyzing and modifying compensation and benefits policies to establish competitive programs and ensure compliance with legal requirements.
• Administering compensation, benefits and performance management systems, and safety and recreation programs.
• Maintaining up to date staff records
• Managing, updating and maintaining the Human Resources System.
• Ensuring optimum utilization of the HR System in respect of monitoring all HR records, generating various HR reports and the overall automation of the HR function.
• Processing leave requests and maintaining leave records.
• Monitoring progress of staff professional examinations and maintaining the necessary records.
• Coordinating staff participation in external training programmes, including liaison with Directorate of Industrial Training for course approvals and reimbursements.
• Dealing with under-staffing, arbitrating disputes and administering disciplinary procedures.
• Planning and conducting new employee orientation to foster positive attitude toward organizational objectives.
• Identifying staff vacancies and recruiting, interviewing and selecting applicants.
• Planning, organizing, directing, controlling or coordinating the staff training, or labour relations activities of the Company.

Academic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized university
Professional Qualifications
• Certified Human Resource Professional or Higher Diploma In Human Resource Management
• Registered as a Member of Institute of Human Resource Management
Experience
• Four (4) years’ experience in either legal or HR practice in a large firm or company
