JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT
Reporting to the Head of Legal Services, the Legal Officer will be responsible for providing effective legal support to the institution, ensuring compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements, and safeguarding the institution’s legal interests. The role entails contract management, credit documentation, litigation handling, regulatory liaison, and corporate governance support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership Role
- Provide leadership and ensure efficient and effective management of staff and resources
- Conduct mentorship, coaching, and training for reporting staff
- Liaise with Head of Legal Services in performance appraisals and address competency gaps
- Represent Head of Legal Services in internal/external meetings when required
- Provide monthly and quarterly reports on duties performed
Litigation Management
- Maintain and update database of cases
- Review progress of outstanding litigation and develop case strategies
- Collate documents and evidence; prepare witnesses for court cases
- Monitor hearing dates and update case outcomes
- Support Debt Recovery Unit in statutory compliance and processes
- Review and issue statutory notices
- Manage external counsel and litigation costs
- Attend court and represent the company when required
- Review demand letters from customers or third parties
Credit Documentation and Perfection of Securities
- Draft and review facility letters, security documentation, and service agreements
- Monitor, control, and report all types of collateral
- Liaise with external counsel to ensure proper registration and perfection of securities
- Ensure all documentation is legally enforceable and compliant
Legal Risk Management and Advisory
- Provide legal advice on existing and emerging laws
- Review and refine legal policies and procedures
- Participate in drafting risk policies and procedures
- Monitor regulatory breaches and ensure proper authorization
- Conduct risk reviews of credit and non-credit products
- Manage third-party legal service providers
- Disseminate legal requirements to management and staff through training
Corporate Governance and Board Support
- Assist in preparation of board papers, minutes, and resolutions
- Maintain statutory registers (members, directors, charges)
- Support implementation of corporate governance practices
Bank-wide AML KYC & CFT Responsibilities
- Reinforce AML-CTF compliance culture
- Implement and enforce AML, KYC & CFT policy within the department
Staff Supervision Responsibilities
- Supervise Legal Contract Staff
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized university
- Post Graduate Diploma in Law
- Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with current practicing certificate
Experience
- Minimum 5 years legal experience in financial services or banking sector
- Extensive exposure to litigation, debt recovery, and security perfection
- Working knowledge of legal requirements and lending practices
- Familiarity with CBK compliance requirements (advantageous)
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
Knowledge and Skills
- Technical skills in conveyancing and securities documentation
- Litigation and debt recovery processes
- Ability to manage senior stakeholders confidently
- Proficiency in computer skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Honest, transparent, and demonstrates high integrity
