The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu (AKHK) is an Institution of the Aga Khan Health Service, Kenya, which is an Agency of the Aga Khan Development Network. The Hospital is part of a network of health facilities, which includes Hospitals and Outreach Health Facilities across East Africa. The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu is in an exciting growth phase and has attained acknowledgment of its quality by achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification, ISO 15189:2022 accreditation for laboratory services, Safe Care level 5 accreditation and is at advanced stage of attaining Joint Commission International Accreditation. AKHK has Outreach Health Services at Kisii, Kakamega, Kitale, Bungoma, Kericho, Kibuye-Kisumu, West End- Kisumu, Busia, Homa - Bay, Migori, Bomet, Eldoret, Kimilili, Nyamira, Kabarnet and an upcoming Medical Centre in Lodwar.
The Hospital is seeking to attract interested and qualified candidates to fill the following positions within the Nursing Department.
PERIOPERATIVE NURSES – LOCUM
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
Reporting to the Manager – Operating Theatres & CSSD, the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering comprehensive perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures across all phases of care. The Perioperative Nurse will ensure patient safety, uphold infection prevention and control standards, and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary surgical team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-Operative Phase
- Conduct thorough assessments and prepare patients for surgery.
- Ensure all pre-operative documentation and consent forms are completed.
- Provide emotional support and health education to patients and families.
- Coordinate with the surgical team for patient-specific preparation and planning.
Intra-Operative Phase
- Prepare and maintain the sterile field and ensure adherence to aseptic techniques.
- Function as a scrub nurse or circulating nurse during surgery.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and pass instruments efficiently.
- Monitor the patient’s condition and vital signs during procedures.
- Perform instrument, sponge, and sharps counts to maintain safety.
Post-Operative Phase
- Receive and monitor patients in the recovery room.
- Manage post-operative pain, bleeding, and other complications.
- Document care provided and communicate effectively with relevant departments.
- Educate patients and caregivers on post-operative care and discharge plans.
REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma in KRCHN
- Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing from a recognized institution.
- At least two (2) years’ experience working as a Perioperative Nurse.
- Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and holding a valid practice license.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and compassionate care skills.
