The Accountant will be responsible for managing financial records, cost control, and reporting within a construction environment, ensuring accurate tracking of project costs, budgets, and profitability. The role requires strong understanding of construction accounting practices, including job costing, contract management, and statutory compliance.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
Project Accounting & Cost Control
- Monitor and track project costs against approved budgets
- Prepare job cost reports and analyze variances
- Ensure proper allocation of costs (materials, labor, subcontractors) to specific projects
- Support project managers with financial insights and cost control measures
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly management accounts and financial reports
- Provide project profitability reports and cash flow forecasts
- Assist in budget preparation and financial planning
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Manage supplier payments, subcontractor invoices, and expense claims
- Verify and process invoices related to construction projects
- Track client payments, valuations, and receivables
- Follow up on outstanding payments
Contract & Billing Management
- Support preparation of interim valuations and final accounts
- Ensure accurate billing in line with project milestones and contracts
- Monitor contract variations and update financial records accordingly
Statutory Compliance
- Prepare and file tax returns (VAT, PAYE, Withholding Tax, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with relevant financial and tax regulations
- Support audits and provide required documentation
Bank & Ledger Reconciliation
- Perform regular bank reconciliations
- Maintain accurate general ledger records
- Reconcile project accounts and resolve discrepancies
Inventory & Asset Management
- Track construction materials and site inventory
- Monitor usage and prevent losses or misallocation
- Maintain asset register for equipment and machinery
Documentation & Record Keeping
- Maintain proper documentation for all financial transactions
- Ensure project files are complete and audit-ready
Job Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA (Part II or above) or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in accounting, preferably in the construction industry
- Experience in project accounting and job costing
- Familiarity with construction contracts and billing processes
