ABOUT SOLIDARITY INITIATIVE FOR REFUGEES (SIR)

Solidarity Initiative for Refugees (SIR) is a refugee-led, community-based organisation founded in 2010 in Kakuma, Kenya, SIR works at the intersection of displacement, gender equity, and economic inclusion. Rooted in the belief that refugees are not passive recipients of aid but capable agents of change, SIR designs and delivers programs in digital skills training, entrepreneurship, early childhood development, emergency response, and policy advocacy and capacity sharing.

Our work is community-driven, evidence-informed, and aligned with Kenya's Shirika Plan, and the Global Compact on Refugees.

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement are home to nearly 300,000 displaced persons from over 20 countries. Kenya's Refugee Act (2021) and the Shirika Plan (2022-2032) open new pathways for refugee inclusion in national systems but turning legal rights into lived reality requires sustained advocacy. community engagement, and institutional relationship-building.

SIR is implementing its Diplomacy Strategy (2025-2030) and the Meaningful Participation of Refugee-Led Organizations (RLOs) in the Education Sector programme (supported by Cohere), which strengthens refugee voice in education across Turkana County. In parallel, SIR is expanding its socio-economic inclusion advocacy through the Nothing About Us Without Us project (supported by Independent Diplomat) and the Refugee Documentation Support Desk (RDSD) which supports refugee youth in accessing important documents such as KRA PINs, work permits, and Convention Travel Documents.
