Background

Amentum, a global leader in advanced engineering, technical, and professional services serving the US government, allies, and critical infrastructure sectors, is seeking an Assistant Fire Chief of Operations to support a unique US Navy program based on the island of Diego Garcia.

Job Responsibilities

The Assistant Fire Chief of Operations is responsible for the operational readiness and functionality of the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) department, ensuring compliance with fire prevention standards, safety protocols, and mission requirements. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership and management for fire department operations on the island of Diego Garcia, promoting a safe and effective firefighting, rescue, and emergency response team.
  • Leading fire prevention efforts, including inspections, compliance assessments, and community outreach activities to ensure the safety of personnel and facilities.
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of emergency action plans, ensuring readiness for a variety of fire prevention, suppression, and emergency response scenarios.
  • Ensuring the fire department meets standards set forth by applicable regulations, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Directly supervising fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials mitigation, and other emergency operations as required.
  • Scheduling and managing personnel assignments and training programs to maintain operational effectiveness and compliance with required certifications.
  • Assisting in preparing and managing budgets for operational needs, including equipment, supplies, and personnel.
  • Conducting risk assessments and ensuring fire safety systems and equipment are regularly inspected and operational.
  • Maintaining accurate incident reports, operational data, training records, and other documentation as required.
  • Acting as a liaison between local, municipal, and military stakeholders, ensuring effective communication of fire department capabilities, needs, and concerns.

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of experience leading an F&ES fire prevention section or division in a fire department of similar size and scope to that of Diego Garcia.
  • Certification as Assistant Chief of Operations, Fire Inspector III, and Plans Examiner I in accordance with recognized standards.
  • Completion or ability to complete the NFPA 101 Life Safety Course within the first two years of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational leadership, team building, and managing emergency response activities.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance for the duration of deployment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce.
  • Valid country driver’s license and passport.
  • Country visa (as required in line with the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide).
  • Completion of advanced coursework in fire prevention, fire safety, and emergency response operations.
  • Familiarity with fire prevention regulations and standards as outlined by NFPA, DoD, and Navy-specific requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing fire prevention programs in a remote or military environment.
  • Strong leadership capabilities in coordinating and directing fire response teams effectively under high-pressure situations.
