Background

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is fully government-owned company in Kenya's energy sector. GDC was formed in 2008 as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to accelerate the development of geothermal resources in Kenya. GDC is tasked with developing steam fields and selling geothermal steam for electricity generation to KenGen and to private investors. Geothermal steam is an environmentally friendly and abundant raw material used for generating electricity. The government and several development partners have been financing risks associated with geothermal exploration and drilling.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Preparing a Risk Management and Quality Assurance plan for the company.
• Developing and tracking Risk register and Quality Assurance metrics for performance improvement throughout the company.
• Identifying quality improvement opportunities and lead quality improvement activities.
• Directing SHE programs and activities so that geothermal energy development targets are achieved in an economical, timely, safe, and in an environmentally friendly manner;
• Providing leadership in the coordination of safety health and environmental monitoring data collected from environmental health safety & social management plans (EHSSMP) in developing a robust Safety Health Environmental Management System (SHEMS);
• Advising on the direction of Safety Health & Environmental Management in accordance with the geothermal development strategy and expansion plan by spearheading the alignment of the evaluated geothermal resource and prioritize exploration and development of potential prospects; and
• Supervising the maintenance of the organization’s Quality Management System including developing and implementing ISO 9001, QMS Maintenance plan.

Person Specifications

For appointment to this grade the officer must have:-

• Cumulative service period of twelve (12) years’ work experience, three (3) of which should have been in the grade of Principal Risk & Quality Assurance Officer or in a comparable position;
• Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines; - Commerce, Economics, Business, Administration, Administration, ICT, Mathematics, Statistics
• Master’s degree in engineering/science/business/social sciences with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering/science/business/social sciences or Masters in field of Quality Assurance and Safety;
• Post graduate certificate in geothermal technology or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution:
• Level II Certificate in Risk and Quality Assurance or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;
• Lead auditor certificate in Risk and Quality Management System from a recognized standards organization;
• Membership to a relevant professional body where applicable;
• Leadership Course lasting not less four (4) weeks from a recognized institution; and
• Proficiency in computer applications.
