About the Role:
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Bookkeeper will be responsible for recording financial transactions, maintaining accurate accounts, and producing financial reports. This includes posting information to accounting journals and software from source documents such as customer invoices, cash receipts, and supplier invoices, as well as reconciling accounts to ensure their accuracy.
Responsibilities:
Your daily responsibilities will include:
- Recording financial transactions from source documents including customer invoices, cash receipts, and supplier invoices
- Reconciling control accounts and conducting periodic reconciliations across all accounts to ensure accuracy
- Conducting weekly reconciliations of all bank accounts
- Processing monthly payroll journals in a timely manner
- Issuing invoices and receipts to customers and ensuring receivables are collected promptly
- Purchasing supplies and equipment as authorised by management, monitoring stock levels and reordering as necessary
- Tagging and monitoring fixed assets
- Assisting the Senior Accountant in preparing financial statements and collating information for external audits
- Maintaining an orderly accounting filing system
- Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes and reporting efficiency
Qualifications:
- A certificate, diploma, or degree in Accounting or Finance
- At least 3 years of relevant bookkeeping or financial management experience
- Demonstrable financial management and recordkeeping skills
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision
- Strong decision-making skills and keen attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Proficiency in remote cloud-based tools such as Google Workspace and Slack
- Working knowledge of financial management tools such as Xero and ApprovalMax
- The ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment distributed across Africa
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates who are able to demonstrate the following will have an advantage:
- Experience in financial management within the not-for-profit or media sector
- Familiarity with grant reporting and donor financial compliance
- Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment
- Proficiency in French, Arabic, or other African languages
Language and Location Requirements:
- Location: Anywhere in Africa (remote)
- Languages: English
- Preferred but not required: French, Arabic and any other African Languages.
