Job Purpose

The Canter Driver is responsible for the safe, secure, and timely delivery of bagged cement and other company goods using a 12-tonne Canter truck. The incumbent takes custody of the assigned vehicle and its load from the point of dispatch to the point of offloading and is expected to observe driver standing instructions, axle load requirements, and Kenyan traffic legislation at all times while in charge of the company vehicle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out a documented pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the assigned canter, covering tyres, brakes, lights, fluid levels, load body and safety equipment, and report any defect before the vehicle leaves the yard;
  • Confirm that the load loaded onto the vehicle matches the dispatch note, delivery note and weighbridge ticket in quantity, product type and destination before departure;
  • Verify that the load does not exceed the permitted gross vehicle weight and that it is evenly distributed and properly secured to prevent shifting, breakage or loss in transit;
  • Drive the assigned route as issued by the Transport and Logistics office, and seek authorisation before any deviation, overnight stop or unscheduled halt;
  • Deliver goods to the customer, stockist or site within the agreed delivery window and obtain a signed and stamped proof of delivery for every consignment;
  • Supervise the offloading process at the delivery point and account for the full quantity delivered, raising any shortage, damage or customer rejection with the Transport and Logistics office immediately;
  • Submit delivery notes, fuel receipts, weighbridge tickets and trip sheets to the Transport and Logistics office on return, and account for any cash or fuel card issued;
  • Keep the vehicle service schedule current, present the vehicle to the assigned garage for routine service and repair, and inspect it on release to confirm the reported faults were rectified;
  • Report all accidents, incidents, breakdowns and traffic offences to the Transport and Logistics office and to the Police where required, and cooperate fully with any investigation;
  • Maintain the interior and exterior cleanliness of the vehicle and keep the cabin free of unauthorised persons and goods;
  • Comply with the vehicle tracking system, speed limits, rest requirements and the Company policy on transport management and fleet safety; and
  • Support other drivers during vehicle takeover and handover and undertake relief duties as assigned.

Key Outputs/Deliverables

  • Safe custody of goods in transit and full accounting for every consignment delivered;
  • Deliveries completed within the agreed delivery window;
  • Complete and accurate trip documentation, including signed proof of delivery;
  • A roadworthy, clean and well-maintained vehicle with no avoidable downtime;
  • Zero preventable accidents, traffic offenses, and load losses.

Academic & Professional Qualifications and Experiences Requires

  • Minimum KCSE certificate; a relevant college certificate in transport, logistics or motor vehicle mechanics will be an added advantage;
  • Valid NTSA smart driving license with Class C1 and C endorsement for heavy commercial vehicles;
  • Valid Certificate of Good Conduct;
  • A defensive driving certificate from a recognised institution will be an added advantage;
  • Minimum five (5) years commercial driving experience in an organised company setting, of which at least three (3) years must be on trucks of seven (7) tonnes and above;
  • Basic mechanical knowledge of commercial vehicles.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Sound knowledge of Kenyan traffic laws, axle load regulations and NTSA operating requirements;
  • Good working knowledge of delivery routes within Nairobi, the counties and the wider East African market;
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and work to a delivery schedule;
  • High sense of urgency and strong time management;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and to complete basic delivery and incident reports;
  • Ability to interpret and follow instructions without supervision;
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills when dealing with stockists and site personnel;
  • A good team player with a high degree of flexibility, including willingness to work extended hours and travel upcountry; and
  • Highest level of personal and professional integrity, particularly in the handling of product, fuel, and cash.
