Responsibilities or duties

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive customer orders and process payments (cash, M-Pesa, card) accurately.
  • Ensure correct pricing is applied at all times.
  • Count cash in the drawer at the beginning and end of shifts to ensure amounts are accurate.
  • Issue receipts, change, and balance returns in a professional manner.
  • Operate the POS system efficiently, ensuring all sales are entered correctly.
  • Troubleshoot minor POS issues and escalate technical problems when necessary.
  • Monitor POS reports to ensure all items sold are recorded.
  • Compile and submit daily sales reports.
  • Reconcile total sales with cash and digital payments received.
  • Flag any discrepancies immediately to the supervisor or manager.
  • Maintain a neat and traceable filing system for sales summaries.
  • Ensure secure handling of cash and avoid unnecessary risks or exposure.
  • Safeguard the cash drawer and prevent unauthorized access.
  • Follow cash control policies, including shift handover procedures.
  • Deposit or relay daily cash to management following company procedures.
  • Greet and assist customers in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Answer customer inquiries regarding menu items, prices, or payment methods.
  • Resolve minor complaints at the counter and escalate complex issues.
  • Maintain a positive and welcoming customer experience at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of transactions, sales receipts, and stock-outs at the till.
  • Update the manager about fast-moving items, shortages, or system errors.
  • Keep documentation organized for audits or reviews.
  • Keep the cashier area clean, tidy, and organized throughout the shift.
  • Work closely with the kitchen/serving team to ensure smooth flow of orders.
  • Follow all company policies, safety guidelines, and hospitality standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial information and customer data.
  • Uphold honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Key Requirements, Skills and Qualification

  • Diploma in a related field
  • Proficiency in operating POS systems (knowledge of multiple POS platforms is an added advantage)
  • Strong skills in record keeping, accuracy, and financial reconciliation
  • Ability to prepare and submit daily sales reports
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • High level of integrity and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle pressure during peak hours

Experience needed

  • At least 1 year of experience working as a cashier in the hospitality industry (restaurant, café, fast food outlet, bar, hotel, etc.)
