Job Description

Our Client in the Sacco industry is looking for a Chief Accountant, to oversee and coordinate the Society’s accounting and financial management functions by ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, prudent financial stewardship, effective internal controls, and efficient treasury operations. The Chief Accountant shall provide leadership in financial operations, support strategic financial planning, enhance operational efficiency, and generate timely financial insights to facilitate informed decision-making and achievement of the Society’s strategic objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s degree is an added advantage).
  • Professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, or an equivalent qualification is mandatory.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years’ experience in accounting and finance, with at least 3 years in a senior management role.
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS, SACCO operations, including FOSA/BOSA accounting, cooperative regulations, and prudential standards.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, risk management, and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, ERP systems, and digital banking platforms.
  • Strong strategic, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, people management, and report-writing skills.
  • High integrity, ethical standards, accountability, and the ability to work under pressure while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Maintain the integrity of the General Ledger and review control accounts.
  • Coordinate month-end and year-end closure processes.
  • Prepare financial performance reports, budget variance analysis and KPIs.
  • Support preparation, implementation and monitoring of annual budgets.
  • Provide financial insights to support business growth and sustainability.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity requirements.
  • Prepare and monitor rolling cash flow forecasts.
  • Oversee bank, ATM and mobile banking reconciliations.
  • Monitor M-Pesa float utilization.
  • Coordinate ATM operations and dispute resolution.
  • Review and process FOSA salary payments and check-off remittances.
  • Support investment management activities.
  • Strengthen and enforce sound financial controls.
  • Review and approve journals, reconciliations and accounting entries.
  • Ensure compliance with SASRA, IFRS, tax and statutory requirements.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory returns.
  • Support implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Promote fraud prevention and accountability.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits.
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Coordinate payroll processing with HR.
  • Ensure timely submission of statutory deductions and returns.
  • Ensure accurate processing of staff allowances and pension remittances.
  • Oversee accurate posting of interest on member loans and savings.
  • Monitor and reconcile member loan and savings balances.
  • Support loan product accounting and reconciliation.
  • Manage employer check-off accounts and reconciliations.
  • Generate portfolio performance reports.
  • Ensure integrity and security of financial data.
  • Support automation and digitization initiatives.
  • Participate in enhancement of accounting and ERP systems.
  • Maintain supplier/vendor records and invoice controls.
  • Supervise, mentor and guide finance staff.
  • Plan and monitor staff workloads.
  • Conduct performance reviews and identify training needs.
  • Promote accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Support succession planning and capacity building.
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS, SACCO operations, including FOSA/BOSA accounting, cooperative regulations, and prudential standards.
