Job Purpose:
The Clinical Officer – Dermatology is responsible for providing specialized outpatient and inpatient dermatological care, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of skin-related diseases and conditions. The role supports high-quality patient care, education, and preventive health initiatives in line with Tenwek Hospital’s mission and values.
Key Responsibilities:
a) Provide clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management of dermatological conditions in accordance with established guidelines and best practices.
b) Perform minor dermatological procedures such as skin biopsies, excisions, and cryotherapy.
c) Prescribe and administer appropriate medication and therapies for skin, hair, and nail conditions.
d) Educate patients and families on dermatological conditions, treatment options, and preventive care.
e) Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all patients seen in the dermatology clinic.
f) Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic and coordinated patient care.
g) Participate in dermatology outreach clinics and health education programs in the community.
h) Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control measures during clinical procedures.
i) Participate in research, audits, and continuous professional development activities to improve dermatological services.
j) Mentor junior clinical officers and medical trainees in dermatological case management.
k) Monitor, evaluate, and report on dermatology service delivery to support quality improvement.
l) Handle dermatology-related emergencies and provide timely interventions.
m) Perform any other duty that may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.
Job Dimensions:
- Analytical decisions – reviewing clinical data and patient outcomes to inform treatment plans.
- Operational decisions – delivering dermatology services and ensuring adherence to standards.
- Collaborative decisions – working with other departments to enhance patient care.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognized institution.
- Higher Diploma in Dermatology or equivalent qualification.
- Registered and licensed with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya (COC).
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in dermatology practice within a busy hospital setting.
- Proven ability to diagnose and manage a wide range of dermatological conditions.
- Excellent communication, counselling, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in medical documentation and use of hospital information systems.
- High standards of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to patient care.
- Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- A committed Christian with values aligned to Tenwek Hospital’s mission.
