Clinical Practice Educator, Private Wing role at AKUH
Responsibilities or duties
Leadership/ Administrative Duties
- Takes lead in identification, definition and monitoring of unit based clinical indicators.
- Is responsible for continuing education/training for nurses in assigned unit.
- Assists the nurse manager and lead physician to initiate innovative and evidence based strategies to improve care for both adult and paediatric patients.
- Participates in development of a culture of safe practice in collaboration with clinical teams and actively participate in multidisciplinary clinical rounds.
- Participates in evaluation of care and outcomes through Mortality and Morbidity discussions, clinical incidence trends and clinical indicators.
- Participates in establishment of standards of care with unit staff, and monitors delivery of care according to established standards.
- Together with the Nurse Manager, conducts regular evaluation of nurses and designs individual development plans based on identified learning/training needs.
- Is responsible for staff files and all learning material at unit level.
- In collaboration with the manager nursing Practice, fosters development of nurses to maximum potential through providing educational/training opportunities and exposure to appropriate learning forums.
- Ensures monthly report of learning activities and spot checks are submitted to the relevant people on time.
- Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team about all clinical matters such as infection control in assigned unit, spot checks and documentation.
- Is a resource person for the care team for all clinical matters.
Supervision of Nursing Staff
- Makes daily rounds of all patients in the unit and assesses their health status to identify care needs.
- Reviews patient allocation to determine correct patient assignment according to the nurse’s competence.
- Assists the nurses at bedside in assessment of both adult and pediatric patient assessments to identify individual patient needs.
- Assists the nurse to plan and implement individual interventions based identified patient needs.
- Guides nurses to evaluate effectiveness of care given through re-assessments.
- Ensures patients receive appropriate teaching about their condition and treatments.
- Participates in discharge planning and ensures participation of patient’s family and significant others.
Continuing Education
- Ensures adequate orientation and settling of new nurses to assigned unit.
- The CPE works closely with nurses at bedside and conducts regular skill checks to identify their training/learning needs and designs individual training programs.
- Designs a plan for continuing unit based learning and works with the nurse manager to ensure participation of all nurses.
- Uses clinical incidences as learning opportunities for nurses and with them plans corrective and preventive actions.
- Maintains records of all learning activities for the unit and individual nurses’ participation.
- Designs methods to motivate nurses in assigned unit to pursue individual professional growth and development.
- Develops and maintains effective networks both internal and external to improve nursing practice.
Documentation
- Participates in evaluation of nursing documents to ensure their appropriateness in capturing patient information.
- Ensures nursing staff are familiar with the documentation policy and trains nurses on the use of all nursing forms/charts e.g. MEWS, PEWS
- Ensures compliance to documentation policy through spot-checks on nursing forms such Initial assessment, Vital signs chart, Patient Education Record, and fluid chart, treatment sheet and progress notes chart.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
- Registered Nurse with current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSc,N)
- Certification in BLS
- Proficient in Basic computer skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to teach and cascade information at all levels
Experience needed
- Minimum 5 years continuous nursing experience in acute care hospital.
- Experience in teaching
- Demonstrates expert knowledge and skills in care of Adult & Paediatric medical surgical patients.
