Responsibilities or duties

Provide comprehensive consultant-level assessment, diagnosis and management of adult patients presenting with acute, chronic and complex medical conditions. Conduct specialist outpatient clinics and consultant ward rounds. Review and manage patients admitted under Internal Medicine and provide specialist consultations to other clinical departments. Develop appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans based on current evidence-based clinical practice. Manage patients with multiple comorbidities and coordinate multidisciplinary care where required. Provide clinical leadership to Medical Officers, residents, interns and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Participate in the development, review and implementation of clinical protocols, guidelines and standard operating procedures. Lead and participate in mortality and morbidity reviews, clinical audits and case conferences. Identify clinical risks and initiate appropriate corrective and preventive actions. Promote adherence to patient safety, infection prevention and control, medication safety and clinical governance standards. Monitor clinical outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement in patient care. Participate in initiatives aimed at reducing preventable mortality, complications, readmissions and unnecessary length of stay. Support appropriate utilization of diagnostic investigations, medicines, beds and other hospital resources. Participate in development and monitoring of departmental quality indicators. Promote timely patient review, treatment planning and discharge processes. Provide bedside teaching, clinical supervision and mentorship to Medical Officers, residents, interns and students. Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME), grand rounds, clinical conferences and departmental teaching programmes. Assess clinical competencies of trainees as required. Promote continuous professional development and a culture of lifelong learning. Support development of clinical leadership capability among junior clinicians. Participate in clinical research relevant to Internal Medicine and hospital priorities. Promote translation of research findings and current clinical evidence into patient care. Participate in scientific conferences, presentations and publications where appropriate. Support research and academic activities undertaken by trainees and other healthcare professionals.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. Master of Medicine (MMed) in Internal Medicine or equivalent recognized postgraduate specialist qualification.

Experience needed

Relevant post-specialization clinical experience in Internal Medicine in a recognized healthcare institution. Demonstrated experience managing complex adult medical conditions. Experience working within a multidisciplinary clinical environment. Previous experience in a teaching/referral hospital is desirable.
