About Us

CIVICUS is a growing global alliance of more than 15,000 members in 175 countries. We work together to expand civic and democratic space. We strive to promote excluded voices, particularly from the global south.

Our Strategic Plan is built on the assumption that we are stronger when we work together. Expanding civic and democratic space requires a collective effort where our members and allies design and test sustainable solutions and deliver impact at scale.

To make this happen, CIVICUS works on five core objectives:

  • Generate timely knowledge and analyses on civil society actions in relation to civic and democratic space
  • Coordinate targeted advocacy to defend and expand civic and democratic space
  • Contribute to stronger emergency and sustained support ecosystems for activists and organisations at risk
  • Strengthen public discourse on civic space and reinforce civil society narratives
  • Build counter power with the most affected groups and their movement

Background and Objectives

CIVICUS regularly convenes members, partners, staff, and allies through virtual and in-person meetings to connect, collaborate, and strategise. In addition, we seek to continually strengthen our own communications and creative practices to better amplify civil society voices.

The consultant will provide expertise in facilitation, co-design, and creative innovation, ensuring that engagements are dynamic, inclusive, and result in actionable outcomes that support CIVICUS’ mission.

Deliverables and responsibilities:

  • Co-design and facilitate convenings and workshops (both virtual and in-person) for CIVICUS and its partners, ensuring inclusive and participatory approaches.
  • Introduce innovative facilitation tools (e.g., visual mapping, improv‑based exercises, creative warm‑ups, magic, collaborative art‑making, metaphor‑based strategy building)
  • Identify gaps in CIVICUS’ current approaches and integrate the necessary elements for relevant and impactful sessions.
  • Support agenda development and session planning for organisational and network convenings, prioritising collaboration, learning, strategy building, and innovation.
  • Facilitate creative and strategic sessions that strengthen CIVICUS’ communications and public engagement practices.
  • Ensure wellbeing, diversity, and inclusivity are integrated into the design and delivery of all engagements.
  • Produce post-session reports and toolkits to capture key discussions, learnings, and recommendations, ensuring outcomes are actionable and accessible.
  • Advise on methodologies and practices to strengthen CIVICUS’ approaches to communications, narrative building, and engagement.

The Consultant

  • Demonstrated experience in creative, participatory, and unconventional facilitation approaches.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to translate complex discussions into clear and actionable outputs
  • Experience working with civil society organisations and communicators, particularly those belonging to traditionally excluded or marginalised groups.
  • Fluency in English is required (proficiency in additional languages will be an advantage)
