The Credit Recovery Officer is responsible for engaging customers in arrears to negotiate repayment resolutions, and where amicable settlement fails, protecting the bank's interests through legal recovery actions. The role aims to improve the Bank’s profitability, loan quality, reduce loan loss provisions, enable provision write-backs, and prepare accurate regulatory and management reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage delinquent customers to negotiate repayment plans and achieve amicable resolutions.
  • Develop and execute account-specific recovery strategies to minimize provisions and maximize writebacks.
  • Coordinate with external parties (lawyers, auctioneers, receivers, investigators, debt collectors) to enforce security and recover outstanding.
  • Monitor arrears reports, issue statutory and demand notices, and ensure compliance with CBK prudential guidelines.
  • Escalate matters to Legal where injunctions or complex legal proceedings are required, and track to resolution.
  • Conduct client visits, repossession oversight, and asset tracing as needed.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports for management, regulatory, and departmental use.
  • Maintain accurate debtor files with full audit trail of communications and actions.

Minimum Qualifications,

  • University Degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Law, or related field.
  • Professional qualification in Banking, Finance, or Accounting (e.g., AKIB, CPA, ACCA).
  • Certification or formal training in debt recovery or credit management.
  • Working knowledge of CBK Prudential Guidelines and internal credit policies.
  • Ability to analyze non-performing exposures and recommend sound recovery actions.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for managing customers and stakeholders.
  • Results-oriented, able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop practical recovery solutions.
  • (Optional) Established working relationships with legal and credit professionals – preferred.
