Background
This role is crucial for ensuring operational guidance on environmental compliance within the organization.
Responsibilities
1. Regulatory Compliance & Permitting
- Ensure full compliance with Kenyan environmental legislation, petroleum regulations, and constitutional requirements relevant to upstream oil & gas operations.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive legal compliance register and permitting strategy aligned with exploration, drilling, and production activities.
- Support the preparation, review, and submission of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), ESIAs and project reports to regulatory authorities, including NEMA.
2. Environmental Management System (EMS) & Assurance
- Implement, and continuously improve the Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with company HSE standards.
- Integrate EMS requirements into field operations, contractor management, and project execution.
- Conduct environmental audits, inspections, and compliance monitoring across upstream activities and contractor operations.
- Lead the investigation, reporting, and close-out of environmental incidents, non-compliances, and audit findings.
3. Environmental Planning & Risk Management
- Identify and manage environmental risks associated with drilling, well testing, production, and logistics operations.
- Support emergency preparedness and response activities, particularly for oil spill prevention and mitigation.
4. Stakeholder Engagement & Social Performance
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, county authorities, NGOs, and community based organizations.
- Support community liaison activities and sustainable development initiatives aligned with company social performance objectives and maintain a social license to operate.
5. Operational Support & Leadership
- Provide environmental advisory support to facilities, drilling, and project oil Kenya teams to ensure compliance and minimize environmental impact.
- Promote a proactive environmental culture across employees and contractors through training and awareness programs.
- Collaborate with HSE teams to integrate environmental considerations into overall operational risk management.
Qualifications
- Degree in Environmental Sciences or related field with at least five years’ working experience in environmental related practices, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
