ROLE OVERVIEW

The Field Sales Representative is an energetic and community-connected sales professional responsible for generating new business and growing revenue from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), local retailers, traders, market vendors, start-up businesses, and community-based organisations. This individual thrives on the ground — knocking doors, building local relationships, and converting everyday business owners into loyal, repeat customers. They are the company's ambassador at the grassroots level, making packaging accessible and relevant to local enterprises of all sizes.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Territory Management & Prospecting

  • Manage an assigned geographic territory and develop a structured plan to maximise coverage and penetration.
  • Identify and prospect potential clients from SMEs, local retailers, food producers, hawkers, traders, and community businesses.
  • Conduct daily field visits, cold calls, and walk-ins to generate new business leads.
  • Build and maintain a live prospect database for the assigned territory.

New Business Acquisition

  • Convert prospects into first-time buyers through product demonstrations, sample presentations, and persuasive selling.
  • Educate local clients on the benefits of professional packaging — from product protection to brand image improvement.
  • Negotiate pricing and terms appropriate to the scale and budget of small businesses.
  • Process new account applications and coordinate with the Sales Admin team to set up accounts.

Client Relationship Building & Retention

  • Maintain regular contact with existing local clients through scheduled visits and follow-up calls.
  • Ensure client satisfaction and address any delivery, quality, or service concerns promptly.
  • Upsell and cross-sell additional packaging products based on the client's evolving business needs.
  • Collect feedback from local clients and relay it to the Sales Manager and production team.
  • Consistently meet or exceed monthly sales targets and new account acquisition goals.
  • Collect payment information and assist the finance team with debt follow-ups where applicable.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date record of all client interactions, orders, and visits using the CRM or field sales app.

Market Intelligence

  • Report on local market activities, competitor pricing, and emerging needs within the territory.
  • Identify community events, local markets, or business clusters where the company could increase visibility.
  • Distribute marketing materials, product catalogues, and samples during field visits.
  • Participate in field sales meetings, team training sessions, and company sales initiatives.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of a Diploma in Sales, Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • A Bachelor's Degree is advantageous but not mandatory — demonstrable sales performance is the primary criterion.
  • Completion of any short courses in sales techniques, customer handling, or communication is a bonus.
  • A valid driver's licence and the ability to operate a vehicle for field visits is typically required.

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Outgoing, personable, and approachable — at ease building rapport with diverse individuals and communities.
  • High energy and a self-starter attitude with the ability to work independently in the field without close supervision.
  • Goal-driven and tenacious with a genuine passion for hitting and exceeding sales targets.
  • Strong active listening skills — able to understand the unique needs of small business owners.
  • Resilience and the ability to handle rejection positively and keep prospecting.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity when engaging with diverse local communities and markets.
  • Basic numerical literacy for discussing pricing, quantities, and order values.
  • Reliability and time management — able to plan daily routes and maximise productive selling time.

TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

  • Strong verbal communication and people skills in the local language(s) of the assigned territory.
  • Basic proficiency in smartphone apps and field sales tools or CRM mobile platforms.
  • Ability to deliver simple product demonstrations and explain packaging specifications clearly to lay audiences.
  • Basic computer literacy — email, WhatsApp Business, and reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with local business communities, trading areas, and retail environments.
  • Ability to read a map, plan a daily route, and manage territory coverage efficiently.
  • Experience selling physical products to small business owners or traders is highly advantageous.
