The Finance and Administration Consultant will provide part-time professional finance and administration support services to AfriCatalyst’s East and Southern Africa Office in Nairobi, Kenya over a period of twelve (12) months.
This interdisciplinary consulting engagement will support the strengthening and execution of AfriCatalyst’s local finance, administration, and operational compliance systems in Kenya. Services will be delivered on a part-time basis, with an expected level of effort equivalent to approximately three (3) days per week on average. The Consultant will determine the appropriate scheduling of services in coordination with AfriCatalyst to ensure timely and effective delivery of agreed outputs and support.
Responsibilities or duties
The Consultant will provide professional services to support AfriCatalyst in strengthening and executing its local finance and administration functions, including:
- Financial Recordkeeping and Bookkeeping Support
- Supporting the maintenance and organization of accurate and complete financial records in accordance with AfriCatalyst policies and applicable Kenyan regulatory requirements
- Supporting the implementation and improvement of practical financial monitoring and recordkeeping systems
- Assisting in ensuring completeness and proper documentation of financial transactions, supporting audit readiness and compliance
- Supporting the local tax and accounting advisors by sharing financial documentation for bookkeeping and reviewing reports received following their treatment.
- Providing assistance to our office in Senegal on an ad-hoc basis in line with the level of effort indicated in the consultancy objectives.
- Procurement and Contracting Systems Support
- Supporting the localization and operationalisation of AfriCatalyst’s procurement policies and procedures within the Kenyan operating environment
- Providing administrative and coordination support for procurement processes and vendor documentation in line with established organizational policies
- Supporting the organization and maintenance of procurement and vendor records
- Systems Strengthening and Operational Support
- Supporting the development, localization, and implementation of practical standard operating procedures related to finance, procurement, contracting, and administration
- Supporting the establishment and improvement of practical administrative and financial systems to ensure operational effectiveness and compliance
- Administrative and Budgeting Support
- Providing administrative and coordination support, notably for activities related to finance and operations as requested
- Supporting budgeting processes through provision of administrative, documentation, and coordination support
- Assignment Coordination
- The Consultant will liaise with the Bureau Chief – East and Southern Africa (Nairobi) and the AfriCatalyst Senior Finance Manager in Dakar (Senegal), who will oversee technical finance workstreams and specialized needs from the Dakar office.
- The Consultant must coordinate with all relevant AfriCatalyst personnel and be available for mutually agreed coordination discussions and team meetings during standard Kenyan business hours.
- On site engagement is expected to facilitate essential coordination and operational tasks at the Riverside office. Frequency will be determined mutually based on the needs of the services but is anticipated to be at least once per week.
- The Consultant will maintain appropriate records of services performed and will provide monthly service summaries describing activities undertaken and outputs delivered in line with the scope of services.
- The Consultant will submit timesheet records of tasks to support invoicing against agreed deliverables.
Qualifications or requirements
Required Qualifications
Only candidates fulfilling the minimum requirements below will be considered eligible for the role.
- Diploma or bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
- Strong organisational skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate across teams.
- A demonstrable self-starter mindset and approach to work.
- Strong interpersonal skills and team-player competencies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft office packages, including Excel.
Desirable Qualifications
The following traits may be advantageous to execute the assignment but are not considered essential.
- Prior experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and/or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software.
- Familiarity with IFRS.
- Familiarity with service taxation requirements in Kenya.
- Written and verbal professional proficiency in Kiswahili.
Experience needed
At least 3–5 years of relevant professional experience in finance, administration, or operations support.
Experience supporting financial documentation, compliance processes, and audit preparation.

Independent Contractor Status
The Consultant shall perform the Services as an independent contractor and not as an employee, agent, or partner of AfriCatalyst. Nothing in this ToR shall be construed to create an employment relationship. The Consultant shall be responsible for their own statutory obligations, including tax compliance, and shall invoice AfriCatalyst for services rendered in accordance with a Professional Services Agreement.
