Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is a wholly-owned state corporation in the Republic of Kenya. Established in 2008 following the unbundling of the energy sector, GDC operates within the generation sub-sector with the mandate to fast-track the development of geothermal resources in Kenya.
Position Overview
Grade: GDC 2
Reference Number: GDC/HRM/GRD/GMGRD/01/2026
Job Purpose
The General Manager – Geothermal Resource Development will provide strategic leadership, technical oversight, and managerial direction for all geothermal resource exploration, assessment, and development activities to ensure a sustainable pipeline of steam for electricity generation and direct-use applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Geothermal Resource Development division, aligning its objectives with GDC’s corporate mandate.
- Oversee scientific exploration and geothermal resource assessment programs, including geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and reservoir engineering.
- Lead the planning, execution, and monitoring of reservoir testing, modeling, and management strategies to guarantee resource sustainability.
- Formulate and implement division-level policies, standard operating procedures, and safety and environmental compliance frameworks.
- Collaborate with executive management to secure project financing, build strategic partnerships, and manage relationships with key energy sector stakeholders.
- Oversee the divisional budget, resource allocation, and talent development programs to maintain a highly skilled technical workforce.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences, Engineering, or a related physical science field from a recognized institution.
- Master’s degree in a relevant technical or business management field is highly preferred.
- Registered member of a relevant professional body in good standing.
- Minimum of 12–15 years of progressive experience in geothermal resource development or a related energy sub-sector, with at least 5 years in a senior management role.
- Proven track record in leading large-scale capital projects, scientific teams, and resource assessment initiatives.
- Strong strategic planning, decision-making, and stakeholders management capabilities.
- Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Geothermal Resource Development division, aligning its objectives with GDC’s corporate mandate.
