Background

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an agency for international cooperation for sustainable development and international education work. GIZ has a federal mandate and the German federal government is GIZ’s primary client. GIZ also works with public and private sector clients in Germany and abroad, including governments of other countries, multilateral organizations, foundations, and companies.

The Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) is a framework of principles and commitments that provides political and operational support to countries and communities hosting refugees. It aims to strengthen the implementation of the Refugee Convention and the Global Compact on Refugees by providing a framework for more predictable and equitable responsibility-sharing. GIZ is implementing projects in various countries to support the implementation of the GCR.

Responsibilities

The Global Compact on Refugees advisor will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the implementation of GCR-related activities in Kenya.
  • Providing technical advice and expertise on refugee policy and protection.
  • Facilitating dialogue and coordination among stakeholders, including government, UN agencies, NGOs, and refugee communities.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of GCR-related projects and initiatives.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the progress of GCR implementation and reporting on outcomes.
  • Organizing and facilitating workshops, training, and other capacity-building activities.
  • Representing GIZ in relevant forums and meetings related to refugee issues.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master's degree in International Relations, Law, Political Science, Development Studies, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in refugee protection, international humanitarian law, or development cooperation, preferably in the East African region.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Global Compact on Refugees and its implementation mechanisms.
  • Proven experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, and policy analysis.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of other relevant languages (e.g., Swahili) is an asset.

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a related field.
