ACLED is growing and provides multiple paths for advancement. Many members of our management team started as data coders at ACLED and now work in a wide range of positions in both the Research & Communications and Programs & Operations departments.

Responsibilities or duties

The Global Crisis Coder Will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Step in as the primary coder for daily data production during major conflict crises globally, as declared by the client or ACLED.
  • Produce daily uploads of ACLED’s conflict event data, utilizing existing sourcing lists, methodologies, and translation tools.
  • Execute the daily data upload using the existing expedited data process and on client portals.
  • Maintain the same data quality and output as regular weekly releases.
  • Serve as the primary coder during a crisis, receiving local expert knowledge and data review support from the Researchers.
  • Support in coordinating crisis coding by maintaining active communication between the Researcher(s), desk management, and the crisis coder team.
  • When not actively coding for a crisis, contribute to the work of the Quality Assurance team or the regional desks. Such tasks can include but are not limited to:
    • Assist in the coding and review of new sources or supplemental data.
    • Monitor data submissions for accuracy, consistency, and methodological compliance, identifying trends, gaps, or changes, and implementing corrective actions through regular QA checks and the new monthly Final Review system.
    • Support larger QA projects, plan and coordinate QA-specific reviews using Asana, aligning tasks and activities with team priorities and timelines.
    • Contribute to the development of ACLED methodology through reviewing resources and familiarizing themselves with ACLED guides, FAQs, and other materials.
    • Provide specific ad hoc support to GDC Desks on real-time coding and other coding-related needs;
    • Engage in methodology and QA discussions during weekly team meetings.
    • Other ad hoc responsibilities as defined by the Supervisor.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

ACLED is seeking applicants who meet the following requirements/skills:

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable when facing new coding situations, ad-hoc work assignments, and shifts in focus (essential).
  • In-depth knowledge of ACLED’s general methodology, multiple regional methodologies, and commitment to data accuracy (essential).
  • Familiarity with coding rules in Africa and/or the Middle East is highly desired.
  • Showed versatility by taking on different roles and providing ad-hoc assistance across various desks.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data considering regional conflict context (essential).
  • Strong proficiency in Excel (essential); experience with formulas and data manipulation, including handling large datasets (extracting, combining, and modifying data) while ensuring data accuracy and integrity; experience with PowerBI and Tableau are a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, keep deadlines, and prioritize tasks effectively and work under pressure of daily deadlines within crisis situations.
  • Problem solving and result-oriented approach, with high capacity for time management and strong communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and openness to feedback (essential).
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Fluency in other languages, particularly French, and/or Arabic, is highly desired.

Experience needed

Candidates located in Asia or the Americas timezones are highly preferred.

  • Availability to work on weekends. Standard working days are Monday to Friday. However, weekend work may be required during "crisis coding" periods.
