Job Purpose Statement

This role is responsible for leading, executing and optimizing all debt recovery strategies across accounts in early and advanced arrears, with a focus on minimizing credit losses and enhancing portfolio quality. This role drives operational excellence within the debt recovery function, ensuring full compliance with the Bank’s core values, credit policies, regulatory standards and governance frameworks. The role holder cultivates a high-performance, accountable culture, reinforcing discipline, integrity and results-orientation. By forging strong cross-functional partnerships with various stakeholders, the role aligns recovery efforts with enterprise-wide objectives, ensuring delivery on strategic targets and safeguarding the Bank’s financial position.

Key Responsibilities

Formulate and execute a robust, enterprise-wide debt recovery strategy that minimizes non-performing loans (NPLs) and maximizes asset recoveries across retail, SME and corporate portfolios.

Direct the debt recovery unit with strong governance oversight, aligning all activities with the bank’s credit policy, regulatory framework and defined risk appetite.

Manage the end-to-end recovery lifecycle, from early delinquency to legal recovery, by deploying timely interventions and effective loss mitigation strategies.

Design, standardize and refine recovery workflows and escalation protocols, integrating automation, segmentation models, and analytics to improve operational efficiency.

Coordinate with legal teams, courts, auctioneers and debt collection agencies to enforce recovery actions while managing reputational and compliance risks.

Drive debt restructuring, rescheduling and settlement programs for viable accounts, ensuring a balance between recovery objectives and sustainable customer solutions.

Establish and monitor key performance indicators, dashboards and portfolio metrics to track recovery performance, identify trends and inform strategic and tactical decision-making.

Lead, mentor and empower a results-driven recovery team by setting clear performance targets, fostering accountability and enhancing technical capabilities.

Enforce adherence to CBK regulations, legal frameworks, and internal policies, while upholding high standards of ethical collections and customer engagement.

Represent the Bank in external forums and recovery-related events, while championing digital tools and innovative recovery strategies that drive sustainable outcomes.


Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a Business-Related Field such as a Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com), Finance, Accounting, Economics from a recognized institution of higher learning.

Minimum of 12 years’ experience in the banking sector, five (5) of which must be in Credit Management at senior level.

Master of Business Administration (MBA), with specialization in Finance or Strategic Management is an added advantage.

KASNEB Certified Credit Professional (CCP) qualification.

CPA (K) - Certified Public Accountant (Kenya)

ACIB/AKIB - Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers/Associate of the Kenya Institute of Bankers

Certification in Debt Recovery/Collections Management

Proven experience in a senior collections role, preferably in a similar industry.

Key Competencies & Skills

Ability to interpret and act on collections data and financial analysis to strategically manage loan classifications, mitigate portfolio risks, and drive maximum recoveries of loans in arrears.

Knowledge of the credit structure and business framework, ensuring full compliance with financial regulations and debt recovery processes in all collection activities.

Ability to strategically assess and understand the unique risks and challenges associated with various financial products per sector to implement effective, preemptive recovery strategies.

Ability to utilize negotiation skills to secure payment commitments, resolve complex disputes and consistently achieve mutually beneficial collection outcomes.

Effective communication and active listening skills to assertively guide debtor interactions, maintain professionalism and secure timely arrears resolution.

Proven ability to consistently execute complex duties and responsibilities, operating effectively and autonomously under pressure without the need for constant supervision.

Ability to apply excellent analytical skills and an analytical mindset to diagnose payment blockages, forecast collection performance, and refine operational recovery strategies.

Strong sense of accountability and proven commitment to delivering assigned outcomes, ensuring all duties contribute directly to organizational financial health.

Excellent leadership and team management, fostering a cohesive and high-performing collections environment capable of sustained teamwork even in high-pressure situations.

Ability to execute all collection duties with demonstrated proficiency, ensuring that all due processes for collecting arrears are followed meticulously across various loan categories.
