Responsibilities or duties

The Head of Department – Mathematics will provide strategic leadership and operational management of the Mathematics Department across the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). The Head of Department will serve as a role model in teaching excellence, professional conduct, and administrative leadership within the Mathematics Department. The role involves guiding departmental staff through best practices in pedagogy, curriculum alignment, and instructional delivery.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing clear departmental goals aligned with the broader school strategy, IB programme requirements, and assessment frameworks. This includes ensuring that teaching practices are consistent, effective, and continuously evolving to meet student learning needs.

A core responsibility of the role is to foster a shared pedagogical approach within the department. This involves mentoring teachers, encouraging collaboration, and promoting innovative teaching methodologies that enhance student engagement and academic performance.

The Head of Department will also develop and implement a comprehensive professional development plan tailored to the needs of departmental staff. This includes identifying training opportunities, supporting continuous learning, and facilitating knowledge sharing within the team.

Performance management forms a critical aspect of the role, including participation in the appraisal of department members. The HOD will provide constructive feedback, support teacher growth, and ensure alignment with institutional standards.

Curriculum leadership is another key component, requiring the individual to lead curriculum development and continuous improvement across all Mathematics programmes offered in the Senior School. This includes ensuring coherence, progression, and alignment with IB standards.
