Responsibilities or duties
The Head of Department – Science is responsible for leading and managing the Science Department across the MYP and DP programmes. This leadership role focuses on driving academic excellence, fostering innovation in science education, and ensuring effective curriculum delivery.
The Head of Department will provide exemplary leadership in teaching, professionalism, and departmental administration. The role includes setting high standards for instructional delivery and ensuring consistent implementation of best practices across the department.
The successful candidate will develop and implement departmental goals aligned with school-wide objectives and IB programme requirements. This involves strategic planning, monitoring performance, and ensuring continuous improvement in teaching and learning outcomes.
The role requires fostering a collaborative teaching environment where educators share best practices and adopt effective pedagogical approaches. Encouraging innovation and continuous professional development is a central responsibility.
The Head of Department will design and implement a structured professional development plan for the Science Department, supporting teachers in enhancing their subject knowledge, instructional techniques, and assessment practices.
Performance appraisal responsibilities include evaluating staff performance, providing feedback, and supporting professional growth within the department.
Curriculum leadership is critical, with the HOD responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of science curricula across the Senior School programmes.
The role also involves establishing comprehensive assessment procedures to ensure accurate measurement of student progress and achievement in science subjects.
Budget management responsibilities include preparing and managing the department’s financial plan, ensuring optimal use of resources to support laboratory activities, teaching materials, and programme delivery.
Collaboration with other Heads of Department is essential to strengthen interdisciplinary learning and ensure alignment of academic programmes across the school.
The HOD will also establish clear frameworks for collaboration within the department and across year levels to enhance curriculum integration and student learning experiences.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
The role requires an experienced IB educator with strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of science pedagogy within an international education context.
