Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Formulate and drive the overarching legal strategy for the entire group, ensuring alignment with long-term business objectives.
  • Risk Mitigation: Proactively identify, assess, and manage legal, regulatory, and compliance risks across all international business units.
  • Commercial Execution: Lead the negotiation, drafting, and review of critical commercial agreements, including complex loan documentation and shareholder arrangements.
  • Governance & Oversight: Serve as the key advisor on corporate governance matters, including convening and servicing the parent company’s Board of Directors and training senior leadership.
  • Compliance Frameworks: Design, implement, and monitor comprehensive compliance programs covering ABC, AML, labor standards, and supply chain ethics, particularly within emerging markets.
  • Budget Management: Prepare, manage, and report on the annual legal and compliance budget.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Prepare and present high-level compliance and risk reports to the Board, investors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Example Responsibility: Develop and champion scalable compliance training programs designed to embed regulatory adherence across geographically dispersed operational teams.

Requirements:

Must-Haves (Essential for Consideration):

  • A recognized Legal Degree.
  • Admitted Attorney status.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of post-articles professional experience.
  • Exceptional written and verbal command of the English language.
  • Proven ability to operate strategically, balancing short-term needs with long-term organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated experience managing legal and compliance matters for companies operating across multiple emerging market countries, ideally with exposure to East Africa.
  • High integrity and the capacity to lead positive organizational change effectively.
