The Human Resources Director reports to the SVP, Human Resources, and is responsible for managing Human Resources operational activities for Opportunity US countries of operation across Africa and India, including onboarding, policy, employee relations, payroll, recruitment, compensation and benefits, LMS administration, and performance management processes. The Director ensures that well-documented and defined processes and procedures are in place, and that HR operations in Opportunity International Africa businesses are compliant with local regulations and meet the needs of the local teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day HR leadership for Africa-based teams, including coaching managers on employee relations, performance management, and legal issues; and ensuring consistent and sound HR management practices that align with Opportunity’s policies and practices.
  • Develop effective relationships and influence at all levels of the organization, with a demonstrated capability to build and sustain strong partnerships based on trust and credibility.
  • Stay informed about regulatory changes, best HR practices, and industry trends by participating in professional HR associations and engaging in peer networking.

Generalist

  • Implement HR strategy, policies, and processes that align and support the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Partner with organization leadership to implement and deliver key people processes, including performance management, compensation, and individual development planning.
  • Act as an administrator of the global HRIS, including maintaining employee data to ensure accurate records and reporting.
  • Act as the administrator of the Learning Management System (LMS), approving and monitoring courses for all employees, adding internal courses to the catalog, managing employee account access, and promoting the LMS features and courses to the organization.

Compliance

  • Ensure the organization’s compliance with all applicable labor and employment laws, and work with external legal counsel on potential liability issues.
  • Conduct investigations, document findings, and recommend a course of action when compliance issues are raised.

Administration

  • Work collaboratively with finance and legal counsel to maintain each of the entities across the Africa Region and India.
  • Manage relationships with Professional Employment Organization (PEO) for countries where Opportunity doesn’t have an established entity, including ensuring that all employment administration data is shared appropriately and in a timely manner with PEO and that the PEO complies with local governmental labor laws and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure all countries’ policy handbooks comply with local legislative requirements and Opportunity US corporate policies and are effectively communicated to staff.
  • Supervise the processing of payrolls for all countries, including locations where Opportunity has an entity or utilizes a PEO.
  • Consult with the head of Human Resources when policy gaps are identified and recommend ways to address and close these gaps.
  • Manage vendor relationships across all countries for benefits, payroll, and payroll tax compliance.

Talent Acquisition

  • Manage the recruiting process for positions based in Africa, providing support to teams for candidate vetting and selection, proactively managing the interview process, and guiding managers on employment offers.
  • Work with the Human Resources Director to facilitate requisitions and approvals for positions based in Africa.
  • Manage the onboarding process to ensure a seamless experience for new hires.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY 

  • Manage the HR Generalist based in Uganda, including day-to-day work assignments, performance management, and professional development.

QUALIFICATIONS   

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or relevant field; HR professional certification a plus.
  • 7-10 years of progressive hands-on HR experience with a proven record of outstanding achievement.
  • Familiarity with administering HR practices and policies within a global organization is a plus.
  • Knowledge of employment laws and practices across countries of operation in Africa (DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia + India)
  • Experience partnering with and influencing senior leadership teams.
  • Highly effective and inclusive communicator.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including influencing, facilitation, and relationship-building.
  • Effective leadership and management skills, with a proven ability to drive change, and provide guidance and support in a business partner role
  • Effectively address and resolve conflicts while advocating for the organization’s best interests.
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment, responding to the needs of different departments and managers.
  • Able to adjust and redirect attention quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to work well under stress and pressure of meeting deadlines and to set priorities with a strong sense of initiative.
  • Strong MS Office skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in HRIS database management.
  • Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.
