The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking an intern to support the upcoming 2026 Water Conference. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a critical global event focused on water security and sustainable water management. The intern will work within the Public Information team, assisting in the dissemination of information and engagement strategies related to the conference.

Responsibilities or duties

The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting in the development and execution of communication strategies for the 2026 Water Conference.
  • Drafting and editing content for various communication channels, including press releases, social media posts, and website updates.
  • Supporting media outreach and engagement activities.
  • Monitoring media coverage and public sentiment related to water issues and the conference.
  • Providing logistical support for communication-related events and activities.
  • Conducting research on relevant water-related topics and stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with other teams within UNEP to ensure cohesive messaging.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a university program in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, International Relations, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication tools is an asset.
  • Knowledge of water-related issues and sustainable development is desirable.

Experience needed

No prior professional experience is required, but relevant academic projects or volunteer work will be considered.

This is an unpaid internship. The intern will be provided with a stipend to cover living expenses. The internship is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The duration of the internship is expected to be six months.
