Strathmore AgriFood Innovation Centre (SAFIC) is an African-led centre of excellence that seeks to empower, enable and scale agri-food innovations, and enhance the competitiveness of food systems across Africa. SAFIC is driven by a clear mission to enhance the competitiveness of the agriculture and agri-food sector in addition to facilitating and supporting innovation within strategic areas of the sector

To strengthen learning, visibility, and dissemination of insights generated from this centre’s programs, the Centre seeks the services of a Knowledge Management Specialist. This consultant will design and implement knowledge management systems, curate learnings, and ensure strategic dissemination of information to internal and external audiences.

Purpose of the Consultancy

The purpose of this consultancy is to design, operationalize, and steward SAFIC’s knowledge management and learning functions, ensuring that program insights, innovations, best practices, and research outputs are systematically captured, packaged, and communicated to relevant stakeholders. The Specialist will strengthen learning loops, enhance institutional memory, and increase SAFIC’s visibility through high-quality knowledge products.

Objectives of the Assignment

  • Develop and implement robust knowledge management strategies and systems for SAFIC.
  • Strengthen SAFIC’s knowledge generation, packaging, and dissemination processes.
  • Enhance learning, internal capacity, and documentation across SAFIC teams and partner networks.
  • Produce high-quality knowledge products that showcase SAFIC’s work, impact, and innovations.
  • Establish strong collaborative mechanisms with public and private sector actors for knowledge exchange.

Scope of Work and Key Responsibilities

A. Knowledge Generation, Packaging & Dissemination

The Consultant will:

  • Develop SAFIC’s knowledge management strategy and guidelines for data and content capture.
  • Lead development of knowledge products in collaboration with program teams and partners, aligned to SAFIC’s strategic priorities.
  • Identify, collate, synthesize, and transform project results, research findings, and innovations into accessible products for diverse audiences (farmers, practitioners, policymakers, private sector, development partners).
  • Establish and maintain SAFIC’s institutional knowledge repository, including digital platforms, databases, and content libraries.
  • Strengthen dissemination through collaboration with government agencies, research institutions, private sector associations, NGOs, and other ecosystem actors.
  • Identify priority documentation topics; conduct interviews, field visits, and stakeholder consultations; and recommend suitable dissemination formats (briefs, blogs, videos, toolkits, case studies, etc.).

B. Learning, Capacity Building & Success Story Development

The Consultant will:

  • Design and facilitate learning events, peer-to-peer sessions, workshops, roundtables, and webinars within SAFIC networks.
  • Produce high-quality success stories, learning briefs, and reflective pieces that highlight SAFIC’s impact and innovations.
  • Build the capacity of SAFIC staff and partners on knowledge generation, documentation, storytelling, learning processes, and the use of KM tools.

Deliverables

  • Knowledge Management Strategy and implementation plan.
  • Content Capture Guidelines and standard operating procedures for documentation.
  • Knowledge Repository (digital library, structured databases, collaborative platform).
  • Knowledge Products, including but not limited to:
    • Learning briefs
    • Success stories
    • Case studies
    • Blogs / articles
    • Toolkits / practice guides
  • Multimedia assets (videos, infographics where applicable)
  • Quarterly Learning Reports summarizing insights, lessons, and emerging trends.
  • Learning Event Reports (for workshops, webinars, roundtables).
  • Capacity-Building Training Materials and post-training evaluations.

Duration of the Assignment

The assignment is expected to run for a period of 12 months with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational need.

Reporting and Supervision

The Consultant will report directly to the SAFIC’s Associate Director and will work closely with program leads, the research team, communications staff, and partner organizations.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Knowledge Management, Information/Data Science, or a related field.
  • 10–15 years of experience in knowledge management, capacity building, storytelling, and/or learning functions in regional, international, or donor-funded organizations.
  • Strong data management and analytics skills.
  • Demonstrated experience developing knowledge management strategies and content repositories.
  • Experience organizing learning and knowledge-sharing events.

Core Competencies and Attributes

  • Excellent communication, writing, and editing skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual abilities for synthesizing information.
  • Proficiency in KM tools (e.g., SharePoint, Power BI, KoboToolbox) and digital repositories.
  • Creative storytelling and branding skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and integrity.

All materials (data, documentation, reports, publications, tools) produced under this assignment will remain the property of SAFIC and may not be used or reproduced without written permission.
