Lab Tech Role Responsibilities
Job Summary
The School Lab Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all science laboratories. This
role involves preparing and setting up equipment for science lessons, maintaining a clean and safe working
environment, and ensuring that all laboratory resources are properly stored, inventoried, and cared for. The
technician plays a critical role in supporting teachers and students to ensure that practical lessons run
smoothly and safely.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Preparation and Support:
● Prepare and set up laboratory equipment, apparatus, and materials for science experiments and
practical demonstrations, as requested by teachers.
● Ensure all chemicals and reagents are readily available and properly labeled for use in lessons.
● Provide technical assistance to teachers and students during practical lessons.
● Assist in the safe dismantling and cleaning of all equipment after experiments.
2. Inventory and Maintenance:
● Maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of all laboratory equipment, chemicals, and supplies.
● Conduct regular stock-taking to identify items that need to be reordered or replaced.
● Order new equipment and chemicals, ensuring they are procured from approved suppliers and
received in good condition.
● Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure it is in good working order.
3. Safety and Compliance:
● Enforce and promote strict adherence to all laboratory safety rules and procedures for both students
and staff.
● Ensure all chemicals are stored correctly and in a secure location, following safety regulations.
● Safely dispose of chemical waste and other hazardous materials according to standard protocols.
● Maintain a well-stocked first aid kit and ensure emergency procedures are clearly posted and
understood.
● Conduct regular risk assessments for all practical activities and a general safety audit of the lab
space.

● Ability to work independently and as part of a team. ● Good communication and interpersonal skills.
A diploma or degree in a science laboratory technician. ● Proven experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably in a school or educational setting. ● Strong knowledge of lab safety procedures and first aid. ● Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
