Description

The Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for performing accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory investigations to support clinical diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention, while ensuring full compliance with SafeCare standards, national regulatory requirements, and quality management systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests in hematology, biochemistry, microbiology, serology, and parasitology in accordance with established SOPs.
  • Ensure accurate specimen collection, labeling, handling, processing, and storage to maintain specimen integrity and patient safety.
  • Validate and review laboratory results before release to ensure accuracy and clinical relevance.
  • Maintain strict adherence to internal quality control (IQC) and participate in external quality assurance (EQA) programs.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations set by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
  • Maintain laboratory equipment through routine calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all laboratory activities, including test results, quality control logs, maintenance records, and incident reports.
  • Monitor laboratory stock levels and manage reagents and consumables to prevent stock-outs, wastage, or expiries.
  • Implement and adhere to infection prevention and control (IPC) measures within the laboratory.
  • Ensure safe disposal of laboratory waste in accordance with environmental and biosafety regulations.
  • Participate in clinical audits, SafeCare & KENAS assessments, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Report critical values promptly to clinicians and escalate abnormal findings as per policy.
  • Participate in pharmacovigilance and disease surveillance reporting where applicable.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical standards at all times.

Job Qualifications & Skills

  • Degree/Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a hospital or accredited laboratory setting.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality management systems and KENAS standards.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems and data reporting.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
