Role Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team in Nairobi, Kenya. The Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing comprehensive legal support to Thunes' operations in Africa, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, and mitigating legal risks. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a rapidly growing fintech company and contribute to shaping the future of payments in the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and guidance on a wide range of matters, including but not limited to, corporate law, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, and employment law.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various commercial agreements, including partnership agreements, service agreements, and vendor contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in the jurisdictions where Thunes operates, particularly in the financial services and payments sector.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of legal policies and procedures.
  • Manage and resolve legal disputes and litigation.
  • Conduct legal research and provide analysis on emerging legal and regulatory trends.
  • Liaise with external counsel and regulatory authorities as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Law degree from a recognized university.
  • Admitted to practice law in Kenya or another relevant jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in-house at a financial services or technology company, or at a reputable law firm with a strong corporate/commercial practice.
  • Strong understanding of financial regulations, payments industry, and cross-border transactions.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in English is essential.
