About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Legal and Advocacy Advisor to support our Sudan program. Based in Nairobi with frequent travel within the region, you will be responsible for providing strategic legal analysis, advocacy support, and capacity-building to advance human rights, justice, and accountability in Sudan.

Key Responsibilities

1. Legal Analysis & Research

  • Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis on human rights violations, international humanitarian law, and transitional justice in Sudan.
  • Prepare legal briefs, reports, and policy papers for internal and external use.

2. Advocacy & Representation

  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies targeting national, regional, and international stakeholders.
  • Engage with UN bodies, regional mechanisms, governments, and NGOs to promote justice and accountability.

3. Capacity Building & Support

  • Provide technical legal support and mentorship to local partners, lawyers, and civil society organizations in Sudan.
  • Facilitate training workshops on human rights documentation, legal advocacy, and strategic litigation.

4. Program Development & Reporting

  • Contribute to proposal writing, donor reporting, and program monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ensure program activities align with LAW’s strategic objectives and comply with donor requirements.

5. Coordination & Collaboration

  • Work closely with LAW’s global team and local partners to ensure a coordinated and effective response to legal and human rights issues in Sudan.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Advanced degree in law, international human rights law, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in legal advocacy, human rights, or transitional justice, preferably in conflict or post-conflict settings.
  • Strong knowledge of international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and regional human rights mechanisms.
  • Experience working in or on Sudan or the East Africa region.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; proficiency in Arabic is a strong advantage.
  • Ability to travel frequently within the region.

Desirable

  • Experience with strategic litigation, legal empowerment, or survivor-centered approaches.
  • Familiarity with donor reporting and project management.
  • Strong networks with Sudanese civil society, legal professionals, or regional human rights bodies.
