Responsibilities

The Marine Engine Mechanic operates independently to perform complex work on heavy duty engines with pistons which directly power multiple hydraulic and pneumatic systems and large multiple, interconnected engine systems, and heavy duty equipment such as marine operations watercraft, service craft, remotely operated vehicles and waterfront support equipment.

Principal Accountabilities

(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)

  • Performs maintenance, repair, and preservation of gasoline and diesel engines, 25 horsepower and above two- and four-stroke outboard engines, hydraulic systems, cargo pumps and valves, tank valves, air compressors and welding machines
  • Ensures marine operations will be conducted IAW most current U.S. Coast Guard standards, CFR 49, IMDGC, OSHA 29 CFR 1917 and 1918, ATP 4-15, and host nation standards
  • Develops fleet maintenance programs, and employee training programs
  • Ensures annual inspections are conducted on all watercraft
  • Performs preventive maintenance to include lubricating, cleaning, servicing, inspecting, and testing equipment
  • Uses manual and computerized diagnostic equipment to evaluate, troubleshoot, make adjustments and diagnose equipment malfunctions or defects
  • Repairs/replaces various parts and assemblies using mechanic power and hand tools
  • Interprets technical manuals, schematics, and blue prints to perform inspections, diagnosis, wiring procedures, and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, ignition, lighting, warning, and injection assemblies and component systems
  • Cleans and cares for tools, equipment and shop facilities
  • Follows safety rules and practices, and complies with Environmental standards in the performance of duties
  • Performs heavy body and sub-frame repairs and/or gelcoat, fiberglass repairs
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of the principles of operation of the internal combustion engine (gasoline and diesel, two and four stroke) and other mechanical components such as brake systems (air and hydraulic), the electrical system and the hydraulic system
  • Ability to keep records and prepare written reports
  • Ability to instruct equipment operators on the application of preventive maintenance
  • Proficient English language skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required on the job

Experience & Education

  • Five (5) years’ experience working as an industrial Mechanic on Marine power system engines
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certifications from a related mechanical trade school
  • Possess valid Driver’s License
  • Additional experience/education may be required by contract or assignment
