The Masonry Worker is responsible for carrying out masonry, bricklaying, repair, refurbishment, and general maintenance tasks within a designated area. The role involves working with hand tools, power tools, light and heavy-duty equipment, machinery, and vehicles.

The postholder may work independently or as part of a team, receiving daily assignments, work orders, and instructions from the supervisor or Chain of Command. Guidance is available for new, unusual, or complex situations. The postholder is expected to be fully competent in all aspects of the trade and, with general guidance, complete assigned work to the required standard.

The role requires compliance with relevant legislation, departmental policies, health and safety requirements, risk assessments, method statements, and site safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Masonry and Construction Work

• Carry out masonry, bricklaying, remodelling, refurbishment, maintenance, and repair work.
• Lay bricks, blocks, stone, and other masonry materials to construct or refurbish walls, arches, chimneys, and other structures.
• Apply, spread, and smooth mortar and other appropriate mixtures over work surfaces.
• Restore, clean, repair, and maintain existing masonry structures.
• Examine brickwork and other structures to identify defects and determine repair requirements.
• Ensure completed work is level, structurally appropriate, and compliant with applicable standards, codes, and regulations.
• Carry out work in accordance with approved method statements, risk assessments, drawings, specifications, and work orders.
• Assist with other maintenance duties as directed and undertake duties commensurate with the trade and grade.

Technical and Planning Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, plans, and specifications.
• Calculate the quantities of materials required for masonry and associated works.
• Plan and estimate the materials and labour required for assigned masonry projects.
• Advise the Chain of Command and senior colleagues on defects, repair requirements, alternative techniques, and practices that may provide better value for money.
• Identify practical solutions to customer and supplier requirements and communicate what can and cannot reasonably be achieved.
• Provide work direction and guidance to labourers assisting with masonry tasks.

Tools, Equipment and Materials

• Operate manual and power tools, including mixers, saws, drills, and other masonry equipment.
• Operate light and heavy-duty machinery and vehicles where appropriately trained and authorised.
• Erect scaffolding and safely set up ladders or other access equipment when working above ground level.
• Maintain all tools and equipment in a clean, safe, secure, and serviceable condition.
• Take responsibility for materials and tools issued for each task, including their safe storage, security, protection from the elements, and accountability for unused materials.
• Inspect, maintain, and correctly wear task-specific personal protective equipment (PPE).

Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

• Comply with all applicable health and safety legislation, departmental policies, Standing Orders, risk assessments, method statements, and site safety instructions.
• Understand and implement all health and safety requirements applicable to each task.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe working environment, including keeping the worksite or workshop tidy at the end of each shift or working day.
• Report dangerous situations, hazards, defects, or shortcomings in existing health and safety arrangements to the Chain of Command.
• Take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your acts or omissions.
• Cooperate with the Garrison Engineer’s Department as required to enable it to fulfil its health and safety responsibilities.
• Do not intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse equipment, systems, or arrangements provided for health, safety, or welfare.
• Comply with BATUK Health and Safety Policy and relevant Standing Orders and confirm understanding of the requirements where required.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Minimum of Trade Test Grade/Level 1 in Masonry or Bricklaying, or an equivalent recognised masonry/bricklaying qualification.
• Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
• Good practical knowledge of masonry, bricklaying, repair, refurbishment, and associated construction practices.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plans, and specifications.
• Ability to safely operate relevant hand tools, power tools, machinery, and equipment.
• Ability to understand and comply with risk assessments, method statements, health and safety requirements, and site instructions.

Experience Required

• Minimum of three (3) years' relevant working experience in masonry, bricklaying, construction, maintenance, or a closely related trade.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements

The role involves working both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work may involve exposure to:

• Varying weather and terrain conditions.
• Hazardous traffic conditions.
• Noise, fumes, odours, and gases.
• Moving machinery and equipment.
• Toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Extreme heat.
• Electrical hazards and potential electric shock.
• Wet and humid conditions.
• High, open, or confined spaces.
• Intermittent vibration and high-noise environments.

The role requires frequent standing and walking and may involve occasional:

• Bending and balancing.
• Stooping and kneeling.
• Crouching and crawling.
• Climbing and working at height.
• Reaching and grasping.
• Lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds (approximately 23 kg).

Following sufficient training and experience, employees may be required to undertake competent-person duties relating to:

• Confined Spaces.
• Working at Height.
• Legionella.
• Asbestos.

Working Hours and Additional Requirements

• Employees may be required to respond to emergency call-backs on a 24-hour basis.
• Occasional evening, weekend, or public holiday work may be required, particularly during special events or emergencies.
• Employees must undertake any other duties that are reasonably commensurate with the trade and grade as directed by the MLM or Chain of Command.
• Employees are required to comply with applicable health and safety legislation and departmental requirements, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992, as applicable to the role.

• Perform maintenance and repair work on masonry projects and refurbishments, in residential buildings, workshops, stores, or outdoors.
