The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org). The individual contractor will be at NOA level 6 . Appointment Against this post is on local basis. The post is located in the UNON Joint Medical Service at the Dadaab duty station. Under the direct supervision of Officer In Charge, Joint Medical Service Dr James Mbai, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities or duties

1. Clinical Duties:

  • Perform day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. attending to walk-in clinic,
  • Medical evacuations, emergencies - provide advice, coordination and direct clinical intervention as may be required
  • Pre-placement and periodic medical examinations,
  • Immunizations, etc;
  • Refer staff to and follow up with outside specialists as necessary;
  • Provide health education and medical counselling to clients;
  • Organize/Participate in addressing work environment and occupational health issues
  • Be on call for emergencies 24/7 as may be required to cover the clinic during off hours

2. Medical Administrative Duties:

  • Advise on, and implement United Nations medical standards, policies, and procedures for recruitment, periodic clearances, sick leave, medical insurance, disability medical evacuations and disaster planning.
  • Under supervision by the chief:
    • Manage the day-to-day operations and medical support of the Joint Medical Service Dadaab; manage and develop the performance of the nurse; ensure availability of supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment
    • Ensure appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the duty station's medical capabilities and preventive strategies (e.g. occupational health, disaster planning, health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

3. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Manage day-to-day mission medical support operations by ensuring availability of supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment.
  • Ensure that appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR).
  • Undertake medical examinations (entry, periodic) according to UN guidelines and procedures
  • Undertake 'outpatient' treatment and immunization requirements
  • Responsible for regular reporting on clinic activities, medical facilities available locally and other statistical information as may be required.
  • Collects and analyses data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Ensures that requirements, background information used for data analysis are documented.
  • Perform any other tasks as required.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Recognized 1st Level Degree in Medicine is required, re In addition, certification required in Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), OR Advanced trauma life support (ATLS), OR Pre-Hospital trauma life support (PHTLS), Or Emergency Trauma Bag (ETB). Computer skills in word, excel, power point.

Experience needed

A minimum of seven (2) years of progressively responsible experience in clinical medical practice within a field environment, hospital setting, pre-hospital environment, or a related area is required. Within these seven years, a minimum of two (2) years' experience working in a busy Accident and Emergency Unit, Intensive Care Unit, or Aeronautical Medicine is required. Experience in managing infectious diseases is desirable. Experience in occupational health and safety at the workplace setting is desirable. Experience in counselling and/or stress management is desirable.
