Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the medical superintendent in charge, the specialist will: –

• Head the unit and discharge both clinical and administrative duties.
• Provide guidance in their departments as consultants in their respective areas
• Train students attached to the department
• Perform general surgical procedures as needed to preserve patient’s health safely
• Analyse records, reports, test results, or examination information to diagnose medical condition of patients
• Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients
• Monitor patient’s conditions and progress and re-evaluate treatments as necessary
• Refer patients to medical specialist or another practitioner when necessary

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B) degree from an institution recognized by Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board;
• Master’s degree in the relevant field;
• Certificate of Registration by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board;
• Have current annual retention certificate by the Kenya Medical practitioners and Dentists Board;
• Must have served in the grade of Senior Medical officer for at least three (3) years
• Certificate in Strategic Leadership Development Programme lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized institution.
