The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This position is hosted by the UNEP Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Unit in the Marine and Freshwater Branch. The Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Within the Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Unit, the Multimedia and Graphic Design Specialist will support the UNEP team to deliver on communications deliverables related to UNEP’s work on marine ecosystems.
Responsibilities or duties,
Under the supervision of the Marine and Freshwater Branch’s Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Unit Chief and Programme Management Officer, the consultant will perform the following duties: Strengthening GFCR’s communications, with a focus on website and social media content, newsletters, graphic design and development of multimedia products to support advocacy, partner engagement, and re-source mobilization. The Multimedia and Graphic Design Specialist shall perform the following tasks:
1 Graphic Design and Visual Production
- Design and produce high-quality graphic materials in line with GFCR and partner brand guidelines.
- Develop layouts for reports, publications, presentations, factsheets, and campaign materials.
- Ensure consistency of visual identity across all outputs.
2 Multimedia and Video Production
- Prepare photo and video materials for communications products.
- Film and produce case study videos, including interviews, b-roll footage, and visual narratives, sub-ject to approved briefs.
- Edit and package video content for digital platforms, events, and presentations.
- Produce light motion graphics or animations as required.
3 Social Media Pipeline Management
- Maintain and update a forward-looking social media content pipeline.
- Produce platform-specific visual and video assets.
- Support campaigns aligned with global ocean, climate, biodiversity, health, and finance milestones.
4 GFCR Quarterly Newsletter
- Design and format the GFCR quarterly digital newsletter.
- Develop graphics, layouts, and visual elements ensuring clarity and accessibility.
5 Website Content Management and Facelift
- Upload, format, and update website content.
- Support a light visual facelift to improve layout, visual coherence, and presentation.
- Coordinate with technical teams as required.
6 GFCR 5-Year Midpoint Report
- Lead the layout, design, and visual presentation of the GFCR 5-Year Midpoint Report.
- Develop infographics and data visualizations.
- Deliver print-ready and web-optimized versions.
7 Visual Asset and Repository Management
- Maintain and update the GFCR photo and video repository, including labelling, metadata, and ver-sion control.
- Ensure assets are accessible and suitable for reuse across communications products.
8 Design and Layout of Technical Publications
Under the Source to Sea Pollution unit, the consultant shall design and produce the layout of the following publications:
- Compendium of Lessons Learned from Wastewater Surveillance at Ports and Airports o Design and format the final publication, including tables, graphs, charts, visual elements, and infographics.
- Towards a Harmonized Approach for Wastewater Surveillance in Africa o Design and format the final document, ensuring clear visual presentation of data, charts, tables, and infographics.
- Capacity Needs Assessment for Wastewater Surveillance Systems in Africa o Design and produce the layout of the publication identifying regional priorities, technical gaps, and capacity-building needs, including visual representations of findings.
- Roadmap for Harmonization of Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance o Design and format the final publication, including tables, graphs, charts, visual elements, and infographics.
