Responsibilities or duties

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct nutritional assessments for inpatients and outpatients, including dietary history, anthropometric measurements, and nutritional risk screening
  • Develop individualized nutrition care plans tailored to patients’ psychiatric and medical needs
  • Provide nutrition counseling and education to patients and caregivers
  • Monitor patients’ nutritional status and adjust care plans as needed
  • Support management of nutrition-related conditions such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, and medication-related weight changes
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, nurses, and other clinicians as part of the multidisciplinary team
  • Participate in ward rounds, case conferences, and care planning meetings
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, and infection prevention standards
  • Advise on therapeutic diets and special feeding requirements
  • Maintain accurate nutrition records, reports, and documentation
  • Support menu planning to ensure balanced, culturally appropriate, and therapeutic meals
  • Participate in quality improvement, audits, and patient safety initiatives
  • Provide nutrition education sessions for staff and patients when required
  • Uphold confidentiality, ethics, and professional standards at all times
  • Participate in continuous professional development activities
  • Any other duty as may be assigned

Qualifications or requirements

KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of nutrition therapy related to psychiatric conditions and psychotropic medications will be an advantage
  • Strong communication, counseling, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
  • High standards of professionalism, empathy, and patient-centered care

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Diploma or Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or related field
  • Registered and licensed by the relevant professional body
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a clinical or hospital setting (mental health experience is an added advantage)
