Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Research Assistants (6 Positions) K MR 6

Vacancy No. FN-01-12-2022

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct informed consent activities for the study 
  • Administer quantitative questionnaires to study participants using tablet PCs 
  • Collect and prepare dried blood spot samples from participants 
  • Timely Data entry of study information collected from participants 
  • Respond to data queries 
  • Work with the assistant study coordinator to ensure accurate data collection and entry 
  • Understand the study design and objectives to assist in the successful implementation of the study 
  • Communicate with assistant study coordinator and data manager regularly on study data progress 
  • Ensure compliance to protocol and procedures for the study 
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting as per study protocol 
  • Works in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability and integrity 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences or related field. 
  • Knowledge of computer packages such as MS word, excel, Access and comfortable working

Other required skills:

  • Excellent communication, organizational skills and detail-oriented 
  • Independent judgment and resourcefulness, understanding of the local social and geographical 
  • landscape as well as the community required 
  • Fluency in English, Kiswahili and Dholuo required 

HTS Counselors (7 Positions) K MR 7

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct informed consent activities for the study 
  • Conducting HIV testing and counseling (HTS) services to the study participants
  • Administer quantitative questionnaires to study participants using tablet PCs 
  • Collect and prepare dried blood spot samples from participants 
  • Timely Data entry of study information collected from participants 
  • Respond to data queries 
  • Work with the assistant study coordinator to ensure accurate data collection and entry 
  • Understand the study design and objectives to assist in the successful implementation of the study 
  • Communicate with assistant study coordinator and data manager regularly on study data progress 
  • Ensure compliance to protocol and procedures for the study 
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting as per study protocol 
  • Works in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability and integrity
  • Participating in study meetings (in-person, internet conference calls) 
  • Assisting with dissemination of study findings

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum Higher Diploma in Health or Social Sciences. Bachelor’s Degree qualification in the related field will be an added advantage 
  • Training, NASCOP certification and experience in HIV Testing & Counselling. Training and experience in adolescent counseling will be an added advantage. 

Experience:

  • Experience with community-based research for public health or clinical studies preferred. 
  • Experience with research studies or programs focused on adolescents strongly preferred 
  • Training and experience in conducting quantitative surveys preferred

Qualitative Research Assistants (2 Positions) K MR 7

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of study design and goals, and ensure that the study is conducted in compliance with study protocols and other regulatory requirements. 
  • Identify and Mobilize eligible participants for the interviews 
  • Work closely with the study coordinators to prepare weekly interview schedules 
  • Conduct qualitative interviews among participants 
  • Assist in transcription and translation of the collected data 
  • Write debrief reports 
  • Provide regular progress reports to the study coordinators 
  • Assist in coordinating community advisory group (CAG) meetings 
  • Ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research and data collection activities 
  • Participate in regular research team virtual and physical meetings 
  • Respond to questions about the study posed by participants and any other relevant persons 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Higher Diploma in Social Sciences related field.

Experience: 

  • At least 3 years’ experience in conducting qualitative interviews, translation and transcription of qualitative data and 
  • one year experience working in a community-based research project in an urban or semi-urban area 
  • Knowledge and experience in community entry strategies 
  • Knowledge in qualitative data cleaning and coding Additional desirable qualities 
  • Commitment to integrity and high quality performance 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in both English and Swahili 
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team 
  • Keen and attentive to detail 
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures 
  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision 
  • Flexibility to travel and interview participants in time and place of their convenience
