Role Summary

The Optometrist will be responsible for delivering comprehensive primary eye care services, including vision assessment, diagnosis, and management of common ocular conditions. The role is central to establishing and growing the eye care service line, ensuring both high clinical standards and an efficient, patient-friendly experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity testing, refraction, and ocular health assessment
  • Diagnose and manage common eye conditions (e.g., refractive errors, conjunctivitis, dry eye, allergic eye disease)
  • Prescribe and dispense corrective lenses (spectacles and contact lenses where applicable)
  • Identify and appropriately refer patients requiring specialized ophthalmologic care
  • Provide patient education on eye health, preventive care, and treatment adherence
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records within the EMR system
  • Ensure proper use, calibration, and maintenance of optometry equipment
  • Support the setup and growth of the optical dispensing unit (if applicable)
  • Maintain inventory of optical supplies, including lenses, frames, and consumables
  • Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) standards
  • Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with other clinicians for integrated patient care

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Optometry from a recognized institution
  • Registered and licensed by the Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority (KHPOA)
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in a hospital or busy optical practice
  • Strong competence in refraction and primary eye care
  • Experience in optical dispensing and retail operations is an added advantage
  • Familiarity with digital health systems / EMRs is an added advantage

  • Excellent patient communication and customer service skills
  • Attention to detail and precision in refraction and prescriptions
  • Commercial awareness (particularly for optical retail services)
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume outpatient setting
  • Team-oriented with a patient-centered approach
  • Commitment to quality improvement and adherence to clinical standards
