The Role Purpose

The Pharmaceutical technologist will be responsible for the safe, legal and efficient dispensing of medications in compliance with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) regulations and institutional policies, ensuring high standards of patient care, inventory control, and pharmaceutical services within a licensed retail pharmacy.

Key responsibilities

Dispensing & Patient Care

  • Accurately dispense prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications
  • Interpret prescriptions and verify legality and completeness as per PPB and Institutional guidelines
  • Provide appropriate patient counselling on safe use of medication i.e. dosage, administration, storage and expected side effects.
  • Promote rational use of medications and antimicrobial stewardship
  • Engage the prescriber or follow the institutional laid procedure for any complex, ambiguous or challenging prescription or clinical query.
  • Ensure all documentation utilized for patient care or stocks management are prepared, properly stored and shared as per institutional policy.
  • Ensure adherence to institutional pharmacovigilance policy and procedures

Inventory Management and Business development

  • Ensure efficient stock management through close monitoring of stock levels and expiries and adhere to institutional policies.
  • Support efficient and lean procurement process and receipt of stocks as per institutional policies
  • Ensure storage of medications and other supplies as per the PPB and manufacturer recommended storage conditions.
  • Ensure pharmacy operations minimize stock losses, pilferage and expiries.
  • Ensure the institutional pharmacy sales and service targets are achieved
  • Propose and participate in health promotion campaigns for the retail pharmacy

Qualifications, skills and attributes

  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution
  • Registered and Licensed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB)
  • Valid annual Practicing License
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in a retail pharmacy (preferred)
  • Good knowledge of essential medications and knowledge of the pharmacy practice aligned with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board
  • Strong dispensing accuracy and ability to escalate complex clinical queries.
  • Excellent Inventory management skills
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ethical, integrity and professionalism
  • Basic financial and Information Management system literacy, especially POS.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Self-motivated and ability to deliver on targets
