Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is a wholly-owned state corporation in the Republic of Kenya. Established in 2008 following the unbundling of the energy sector, GDC operates within the generation sub-sector with the mandate to fast-track the development of geothermal resources in Kenya.
Position Overview
Grade: GDC 5
Reference Number: GDC/HRM/CSLS/LS/PLSO/02/2026
Job Purpose
The Principal Legal Services Officer will draft, review, and negotiate critical business agreements, manage litigation files, and ensure GDC operations comply with statutory laws, procurement acts, and administrative laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft and review commercial contracts, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), land leases, and joint-venture contracts.
- Monitor, manage, and coordinate litigation cases represented by GDC's external legal counsels.
- Provide legal advice on public procurement guidelines, employment laws, and general statutory compliances.
- Conduct research and draft legal opinions on complex corporate transactions and constitutional matters.
- Support Board secretarial duties, committee operations, and governance audits.
- Assist in legal dispute-resolution processes, arbitrations, and regulatory mediations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized university.
- Post-graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law (KSL).
- Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with an active practicing certificate.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of relevant corporate legal experience or practice in a busy commercial law firm.
- Experience in corporate governance, commercial law, energy law, or public administration is highly preferred.
- Excellent negotiation, legal drafting, advocacy, and analytical skills.
