About the job
Procurement Officer — Job Description
Company: Narayan Builders Ltd Location: Mombasa, Kenya Reporting to: Director / Operations
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Procurement Officer to manage material sourcing, supplier relationships, and inventory for our construction projects. This is a hands-on role requiring someone who understands construction materials, can read project requirements from engineers, and has the negotiation skill to secure the best pricing without compromising on quality or timelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet regularly with civil engineers and site teams to understand project scope and determine material requirements
- Proactively plan and place orders for weekly material needs, ensuring sites never run short
- Manage inventory across sites and stores — tracking stock levels, usage rates, and reorder points
- Source, meet, and maintain strong working relationships with hardware suppliers and manufacturers
- Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and delivery schedules to get the best value on every purchase
- Visit construction sites regularly to assess progress and adjust material/stock planning accordingly
- Compare quotations across multiple vendors and flag inconsistencies or inflated pricing
- Maintain accurate procurement records, purchase orders, and supplier documentation
- Coordinate with site supervisors and store personnel on delivery timing and material handling
- Identify new suppliers and alternative sourcing options to improve cost efficiency and reduce delays
Requirements
- Minimum 4–5 years of procurement experience within the construction industry (non-negotiable — general/office procurement background not suitable)
- Established relationships with hardware suppliers and manufacturers, ideally within Mombasa/coastal Kenya
- Strong negotiation skills with a track record of securing favorable pricing
- Solid understanding of construction materials (cement, steel, tiles, aggregates, timber, plumbing/electrical supplies, etc.) and typical usage/wastage rates
- Comfortable reading project drawings/BOQs or working closely with engineers to translate scope into material needs
- Good numeracy and quotation-comparison skills — able to spot unbalanced or padded bids
- IT literate; working knowledge of Zoho (Inventory/Books or similar) preferred
- Valid driving license and willingness to travel between sites regularly (Company vehicle will be provided)
- Well organized, deadline-driven, and able to work proactively rather than reactively
Requirements added by the job poster
- 4+ years of work experience with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC)
