The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) is a pan-African non-governmental organization working through a network of 34 National Chapters across the continent. FAWE is dedicated to advancing gender equity and equality in education by influencing policies, fostering positive societal attitudes, and promoting inclusive practices that support girls’ and women’s education throughout Africa.
Position Summary:
FAWE seeks to recruit an experienced Programme Officer- PWD and Refugees to support the organization in achieving its strategic objectives by providing leadership and technical input for social inclusion as envisaged in the FAWE Strategic Plan (2024 – 2028) and the Organisational Workplan. Specific focus will be on quality education and training opportunities for African girls and young women to develop relevant skills for the world of work. He/she will be responsible for ensuring inclusion of PWD and Refugees in FAWE programme work and advocacy.
Contract Type:
This position is on a fixed contract for three years with the possibility of extension based on the availability of funding and individual’s performance.
Location:
The Programme Officer PWD and Refugees will be based in the Regional Office in Nairobi, with frequent travel across the region.
Reporting to:
Senior Programme Officer
Functional Relationships:
All Units within FAWE, FAWE’s 34 National Chapters, Civil Society Organizations, and regional and sub-regional policy bodies, among others.
Direct Reportees:
None
Key Result Areas
- Leadership on social inclusion including identification of new programmes, strategies of implementation and resources as guided by the Organisation Strategic Plan.
- Ensure programme evaluations, assessments, research and sustainability plans for inclusion of PWD and Refugees in FAWE programmes.
- Resource mobilisation for comprehensive inclusion and programme development.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Programme Management- Support to program planning, implementation and evaluation (60%)
- Lead on social inclusion in FAWE programmes specifically inclusion of PWD and Refugees in the education and skills training programme in 10 African countries over a period of 7 years. (Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Senegal, Liberia and Ghana).
- Fostering innovative inclusion strategies gender equity and transformative education principles, creating opportunities for PWD and Refugees in FAWE programming.
- Leadership in building effective partnerships, new programmes and resource mobilisation for scaleup and/or replication.
- Monitor quality assurance processes and systems to ensure the highest quality of the project implementation – education, gender and social inclusion.
Capacity Building and Programme Development (20%)
- Support internal assessment and recommend on capacity building needs for FAWE social inclusion components.
- Guide on building and strengthening alliances with organisations working with PWDs and refugees.
- Support National Chapters on social inclusion programming.
Building and Strengthening partnerships – Global, Regional and National contexts (10%)
- Build and support the partnership between project partners, national chapters and any other partners to strengthen FAWE social inclusion strategies.
- Lead in advocacy to widen the civic space for African girls who are refuges and those with disability in all their diversity.
- Work closely with the other teams including advocacy and partnerships team to amplify and sustain PWD and Refugee voice as they demand the realization of their education rights.
Resource Mobilisation (10%)
- Resource mobilisation for social inclusion initiatives. This includes pitching ideas with development partners and support in negotiation meetings.
- Provide technical input in funding proposals for social inclusion.
Qualifications and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences such as Education, Gender and Development, Public Health, Political Science, Philosophy, Law, Project Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 3 years in the NGO sector.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is highly desirable and will be considered a strong advantage.
- Demonstrated experience in building and managing strategic partnerships, particularly within multi-country consortiums involving diverse stakeholders.
- Proven ability in writing high-quality reports and delivering impactful presentations, with a focus on project processes, outcomes, outputs, and deliverables.
- Solid understanding of key issues related to education & social inclusion.
Key Competencies
- Demonstrated strategic thinking and creativity, with the ability to align vision with practical implementation.
- Strong skills in problem analysis and resolution, with the capacity to perform effectively under pressure and tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills in English, including writing, editing, and verbal articulation.
- Strong persuasive abilities, with proven networking and interpersonal skills to engage a variety of stakeholders.
- Highly competent in planning, organizing, and managing tasks, ensuring effective execution and accountability.
- A person of high integrity, professionalism, and a collaborative spirit; an approachable and reliable team player.
- Willingness and ability to travel periodically, both domestically and internationally as required.
