Peace Winds is a disaster preparedness, response and recovery organization. Peace Winds advocates for increased collaboration between governments, militaries, NGOs, and the private sector to prepare for and respond to natural disasters across the globe, with the Japan - U.S. relationship as the cornerstone of humanitarian assistance.

Responsibilities or duties

The Project Field Assistant, will be a member of a team that engages with communities to:

  • Coordinate activities with beneficiaries and stakeholders in both host communities of Kakuma Town and Kalobeyei Town, Kakuma Refugee Camp, and the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement to reduce solid waste generation and improve environmental hygiene through the current project, 'Project for Establishment of Decentralized Solid Waste Management System for Recyclable Society in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Wards, Turkana County'.
  • Support the establishment of community-based decentralized solid waste management systems by assisting with program strategies, data collection and consolidation from multiple sources, and coordination of program implementation with stakeholders.
  • Ensuring that the planned solid waste management activities are implemented according to the assigned budget, timeline, as well as Peace Winds internal policies and procedures. The team works closely with Peace Winds staff, partners, and government departments during the delivery of interventions.
  • Maintain project documentation, conduct field level follow ups, and discharge any other duties, roles, and responsibilities as assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Project management and development:

  • Promote sustainable solid waste management by encouraging households and business owners to segregate waste correctly, dispose of it at designated locations, and participate in community clean-up action day activities.
  • Understand solid waste management systems in Kenya and operational realities to support the adoption of suitable waste management practices for both host and refugee communities in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. This includes fostering sustainable structures tailored to each community through ongoing engagement with local residents and relevant stakeholders.
  • Support workshops for community-based organizations (CBOs) and community leaders involved in waste collection, recycling, aiming to strengthen proper waste management behaviours, and ensure that action plans developed during these workshops are effectively implemented.
  • Monitor financial data such as income and expenditure to support the financial sustainability of activities. Analyze information to enhance economic independence and promote measures to improve efficiency and profitability, including cost reduction and adoption of cost-effective management practices.

Monitoring and reporting

  • Monitor the operation of decentralized solid waste management systems, ensuring residents’ and stakeholders’ feedback is collected, considered, and integrated into project operations with their understanding and cooperation.
  • Support the collection and organization of baseline data on the composition, quantity, and disposal destinations of solid waste generated by households, market, other economic activities, and public facilities within project areas.
  • Review the progress of waste management plans developed by communities and market committees, supporting the establishment of sustainable operational structures and the development or improvement of plans with a medium and long-term perspective.
  • Monitor the progress, efficiency, and financial status of recyclable materials at Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and recycling centres, including processes such as compression, shredding, and production of recycled products. Summarize findings in reports and share analyses with stakeholders to facilitate solving problems.
  • Support the strengthening of quality control systems and assist in the development and implementation of marketing strategies for recycled products, in collaboration with operating companies and relevant organizations.

Planning and budgeting

  • Support the preparation of activity budgets and assist supervisors to ensure that project activities are executed smoothly and within the specified timeframe.
  • Support the preparation of implementation and procurement plans and ensure their timely submission to supervisors.
  • Carry out any other tasks as instructed by supervisors.

General tasks

  • Support the facilitation workshops and training sessions effectively through coaching, guidance, and the promotion of participant understanding.
  • Assist with the procurement, coordination, delivery, use, and accountability of project resources.
  • Record project activities through training session reports, participant understanding assessments, and related documentation. Manage training attendance lists, participant registers, and materials for both facilitators and participants.
  • Manage all training logistics, supporting facilitators by arranging required materials, venue, equipment, meals, refreshments, and participant attendance confirmation, facilitator invitations, and reporting.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

  • Essential:
    • Advanced facilitation skills in the local language of the host community.
    • Residency in Kakuma or Kalobeyei.
    • Desirable:
      • Ability to communicate effectively with host and refugee communities and prepare reports.
      • Beneficial:
        • Holds a degree in environmental science / public health / community health from a recognized institution.
        • Familiarity with local humanitarian conditions.
