Job Purpose
The Project Surveyor will provide all survey, setting-out, mapping, measurement, and as-built verification support for a remote sugar farm and factory construction project. The role covers farm block surveys, roads, drains, canals, pipelines, pump stations, factory platforms, foundations, buildings, utilities, camps, and support infrastructure. The Surveyor will maintain reliable site control, translate approved drawings into accurate ground positions, check contractor work, prepare clear survey records, and support progress measurement in demanding field conditions.
Reporting and Working Relationships
- Reports To: Agricultural Engineer
- Supervises: Survey Assistants, Chainmen, and temporary field support staff.
- Coordinates With: Cross-functional project teams (Civil Engineer, Irrigation Engineer, Road Works Engineer, Factory Construction Team, Agronomist, HSE Officer, Quantity Surveyor) and contractors, machine operators, or community/land liaison stakeholders.
Principal Accountabilities
- Survey Control & Benchmarks: Establish, verify, and protect project control points, benchmarks, coordinates, and reference levels across the farm, factory site, and infrastructure corridors.
- Topographical Surveys: Carry out surveys for farm blocks, roads, drains, canals, reservoirs, pump stations, pipelines, power routes, factory platforms, buildings, workshops, camps, and yards.
- Setting Out: Set out grids, boundaries, centerlines, levels, gradients, foundations, column lines, culverts, trenches, embankments, pipeline routes, canals, road alignments, and equipment plinths.
- Farm Development Support: Support land clearing, leveling, ripping, cultivation, pivot layouts, irrigation command areas, access roads, and drainage planning with levels, profiles, cross sections, and area measurements.
- Factory Construction Support: Verify excavations, platform levels, foundation positions, anchor bolt locations, finished floor levels, drainage falls, utility corridors, and as-built locations for civil and industrial works.
- Measurement & Quantities: Measure earthworks, roadworks, trenches, drains, canals, platforms, fill areas, and completed works for progress reporting, payment checks, and quantity verification.
- Data & Drafting: Prepare contour plans, setting-out sheets, level records, field sketches, coordinates, layout plans, as-built drawings, survey reports, and handover records.
- Contractor Coordination: Check contractor survey work, confirm latest drawing revisions, identify discrepancies early, issue clear field instructions through the engineer, and support joint inspections.
- HSE Compliance & Quality: Maintain instrument calibration records, protect survey controls, work safely around heavy plant, traffic, excavations, heat, dust, and remote field risks, and escalate unsafe conditions.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- System Readiness & Control: Survey control points and benchmarks established, protected, and verified before major construction or farm-development work fronts proceed.
- Project Controls: Setting-out requests completed accurately and on time for roads, drains, irrigation works, foundations, buildings, utilities, and factory areas.
- Operational Efficiency: Timely verification of quantities, cut-and-fill checks, and early identification of survey discrepancies or drawing conflicts to prevent rework, payment disputes, or delays.
- Subcontractor Management: Effective oversight of contractor survey work, clear field instructions, and accurate data validation during joint inspections.
- Quality Assurance: Compliance of established baselines, layout gradients, foundation alignments, and construction tolerances with approved technical design packages.
- HSE Compliance: Zero avoidable safety incidents arising from survey activity around heavy equipment, traffic, excavation edges, heat stress, or remote field movement.
- Documentation & Handover: Prompt submission of as-built drawings, level sheets, quantity measurements, and survey records characterized by clear file naming and traceable source data.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Diploma, Higher Diploma, or Degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial Engineering, Surveying and Mapping, Civil Engineering Surveying, or a closely related discipline. Professional body membership or license is an asset.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of practical surveying experience in civil works, roads, irrigation, agriculture, industrial construction, water infrastructure, or large land-development projects. At least 3 years must be hands-on site setting out, level tracking, and quantity measurements.
- Technical Expertise: Advanced proficiency with Total Station, RTK/GNSS GPS, digital levels, handheld GPS, and field data collectors; professional competence in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, QGIS/ArcGIS, and survey processing software.
- Operations & Leadership: Demonstrated ability to manage field data, guide engineering teams and contractors, and supervise survey assistants or field crews in remote, high-temperature construction settings.
- Project Controls: Strong capability in reading drawings, profiles, specifications, BOQs, interpreting construction tolerances, and maintaining strict measurement logs.
- License & Certifications: Valid driver’s license with readiness to operate in remote farm terrain. Training in Project Management, Contract Administration, HSE, or construction supervision is an asset.
