Background

We mobilize communities to realize their full potential and increase their conversion power. CPN is the socio-economic development arm of the Kenya Mennonite Church Diocese of Nairobi. CPN was founded in 2012 to facilitate a synergized proactive and robust response to the contemporary & everyday life challenges in marginalized communities within and around Nairobi in a bid to reduce the level of social vulnerability, poverty and intolerance within communities. We endeavor to address challenges such as violence and continued deterioration of living standards. It thus seeks to work with the underprivileged in a partnership aimed at transforming lives. It is managed through a management board appointed by the Kenya Mennonite church diocesan council.

JOB PURPOSE

CPN is seeking a qualified and experienced Project Officer – Maternal and Child Health (MCH) to coordinate the implementation, monitoring and reporting of its community-based MCH project. The Project Officer will coordinate community mobilization, health education, referrals, follow-up, capacity building, field monitoring, data management, and stakeholder engagement. The position will work closely with Care Group Volunteers, Community Health Promoters (CHPs), Community Health Assistants (CHAs), health facilities, County and Sub-County health teams, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders, particularly in urban informal settlements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Implementation and Coordination

• Coordinate implementation of MCH and community health activities in line with approved work plans, budgets, project objectives and donor requirements.
• Coordinate, strengthen, and monitor Care Groups and Care Group Volunteers as a core program strategy.
• Support community mobilization and participation in program activities.
• Facilitate training, mentorship and supportive supervision of Care Group Volunteers, CHPs, CHAs and other community-based actors.
• Coordinate relevant community development activities that contribute to improved health and community wellbeing.

Community Health and Nursing

• Provide appropriate technical support on maternal, newborn and child health, including antenatal care, safe delivery, postnatal care, newborn care, immunization and appropriate health-seeking practices.
• Apply community nursing approaches to support health promotion, disease prevention, household follow-up, referrals and continuity of care.
• Facilitate community health education, screening, counselling, referrals and follow-up for pregnant women, mothers, newborns and young children.
• Strengthen linkages between households, Care Groups, CHPs, CHAs and health facilities and follow up referral completion.

Monitoring, Reporting and Data Management

• Conduct regular field monitoring visits and track implementation against approved plans and indicators.
• Collect, verify, and analyze program data and maintain accurate beneficiary, activity, referral, and Care Group records.
• Prepare timely and accurate narrative, technical, and donor reports.
• Identify implementation challenges, community health concerns and emerging needs and recommend appropriate action.

Stakeholder Coordination and Compliance

• Maintain effective coordination with County and Sub-County health teams, health facilities, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders.
• Support responsible use of programme resources and compliance with CPN policies, procedures and approved budgets.
• Ensure programme activities uphold safeguarding, confidentiality, dignity, inclusion, gender responsiveness, conflict sensitivity and the principle of do no harm.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Qualifications

• A Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Community Health, Community Health Nursing, Public Health, Community Development or a related health or community development field from a recognized institution.

Experience

• At least three years of relevant professional experience in maternal and child health, community health, community nursing or development programming.
• Demonstrated experience working with communities in urban informal settlements.
• Experience working with CHPs, CHAs, community volunteers, health facilities and government health structures.
• Experience in community-based health promotion, disease prevention, household follow-up, referrals and community mobilization.
• Experience in project planning, implementation, monitoring, data management and reporting.
• Good knowledge of maternal, newborn and child health and relevant Government of Kenya community health policies and guidelines.
• Good computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and digital data/reporting platforms.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English and Kiswahili.
• Ability to work independently, coordinate diverse stakeholders, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Commitment to professional ethics, safeguarding, accountability and confidentiality.
