Médecins sans frontières (MSF) or Doctors Without Borders, is an international humanitarian-aid non-governmental organization (NGO) and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, best known for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries facing endemic diseases.
As a psychiatrist working with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), your main responsibility will be to propose, implement and improve treatment plans for patients who suffer from mental health disorders. You'll need to make sure you're using strategies and tools that are appropriate for their specific context and culture. An important aspect of your work will be coordinating various activities and providing guidance and supervision to locally recruited colleagues engaged in psychosocial support and mental health initiatives.
Your daily tasks will usually consist of conducting individual clinical consultations and organizing therapeutic or psycho-educational activities in groups.
While your primary area of work is clinical, you will play a critical role in recruiting, training and supervising locally recruited mental health professionals. In addition, your ability to adapt tools and interventions according to local cultural specificities and a changing context will be essential.
Certification in Psychiatry with Active Licensure
Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience (post-residency) in a multidisciplinary setting treating patients with psychotherapeutic and/or counseling methods
Minimum of six months of clinical experience within the last two years
Work experience in mental health issues associated with at least TWO of the following areas:
- HIV/AIDS
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Sexual violence
- Trauma
- Tuberculosis (TB)
Experience in managing people within a multicultural team (supervision and training)
Proficiency in English at an expert level. Fluency in French is highly valued, and other languages such as Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese are also assets.
Relevant experience of travelling or working in contexts similar to those where MSF works (armed conflicts, disasters, public health emergencies or situations of exclusion from health care)
Excellent command of English
Available for a minimum period of 6 to 12 months as part of MSF's international programmes
ASSETS
Experience with migrants, internally displaced persons and/or refugees
Experience in short-term therapy
Experience in providing mental health care benefits for adults, youth and children
Experience in individual, family and group counselling
Experience in community-based or trauma-focused psychosocial programs
Experience in adapting recognized and accepted therapeutic techniques taking into account local cultural contexts
Experience in adherence consultation and/or patient education with chronic conditions
