Job Purpose
The Export Sales Manager is responsible for leading, developing, and executing the company’s export commercial strategy to drive profitable revenue growth across target export markets. This role oversees distributor networks, identifies new market entry opportunities, manages cross-border trade compliance, and ensures sustainable market share acquisition. The ideal candidate combines high-level strategic planning with disciplined operational execution in export business development.
Key Responsibilities
Market Expansion & Business Development
- Formulate and execute comprehensive export sales strategies aligned with overall corporate revenue goals.
- Conduct regional market assessments to evaluate demand, regulatory requirements, competitive landscapes, and entry barriers.
- Identify, negotiate with, and onboard high-performing distributors, agents, and key retail partners across target export territories.
- Formulate and implement route-to-market strategies for each territory to deliver effective product availability and retail visibility.
Partner Management & Account Leadership
- Establish clear key performance indicators (KPIs) and annual sales targets for regional distribution partners.
- Manage key distributor relationships across assigned territories (e.g., EAC, COMESA, and broader markets).
- Conduct regular business reviews with overseas partners to evaluate sales performance, stock cover, and promotional ROI.
- Develop joint commercial plans, marketing campaigns, and trade activations with regional partners in conjunction with marketing teams.
Commercial Governance & Financial Oversight
- Oversee export pricing structures, trade margins, credit terms, and currency exposure risks in collaboration with Finance.
- Deliver accurate volume and revenue forecasts to ensure alignment with production and supply chain capacity.
- Manage trade spending budgets, distributor rebates, and promotional funds to maximize commercial return.
Operations, Compliance & Risk Management
- Partner with Supply Chain and Logistics teams to ensure seamless cross-border shipping, freight management, and customs clearance.
- Ensure all exported products strictly comply with recipient country regulatory standards, labeling laws, and trade documentation.
- Monitor foreign trade agreements, tariff updates, and geopolitical developments impacting export growth and risk exposure.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Export Business, Marketing, Supply Chain, or a related field.
- Master’s degree or MBA in Export Trade or Commercial Strategy is highly preferred.
- Professional certification in Export Management or Supply Chain Management is advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum 7+ years of progressive sales experience within Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) or manufacturing.
- At least 3 to 5 years of proven leadership in managing export markets, distributor networks, and cross-border trade operations.
- Demonstrated record of success developing markets within regional export corridors (e.g., East Africa, COMESA, or broader trade blocs).
Technical Skills
- Contract & Negotiation: Advanced capabilities in negotiating complex multi-year distribution agreements, commercial terms, and credit facilities.
- Financial Acumen: Deep understanding of foreign exchange dynamics, Incoterms, trade finance mechanisms (e.g., Letters of Credit, Bank Guarantees), and gross margin optimization.
- Logistics & Trade Compliance: Practical knowledge of export/import documentation, shipping routes, customs compliance, and export commercial law.
- Strategic Leadership: Strong analytical capability to convert market insights and sales statistics into actionable commercial growth.
- Professional level proficiency in MS Office applications.
